SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE MARIO GAME UNLESS YOU CONSIDER DR. MARIO A PROPER MARIO GAME IN WHICH CASE YOU’VE NOW DISCOVERED WHICH MARIO GAME WOULD TIE SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 FOR MY FAVORITE MARIO GAME.

THERE IS NO PURPOSE TO THIS POST OTHER THAN TO INFORM YOU OF THESE IMPORTANT FACTS.

I LOVE THOSE TURNIPS AND THE SOUNDS WART MAKES WHEN YOU FEED HIM VEGGIES AND THE HARPIES IN DESTINY MAKE A VERY SIMILAR SOUND WHEN YOU TAKE THEM DOWN AND I LIKE THAT WEIRD HONK AND I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE A PROPER SEQUEL TO SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 WHERE WART COMES BACK ONLY THIS TIME YOU HAVE TO FEED HIM KALE AND HE’S LIKE WELL NOW THIS IS PERSONAL AND THEN YOU GET CREATIVE WITH BAKING VEGGIES INTO CASSEROLES AND TAKING THEM TO HIS DOORSTEP AND LEAVING THEM THERE ALL HOT AND DELICIOUS AND HE EATS THEM OF HIS OWN ACCORD AND REALIZES HE LOVES CASSEROLE (I MEAN WHO DOESN’T LOVE CASSEROLE?) AND VEGETABLES AND HE BECOMES YOUR FRIEND AND THE REST OF THE GAME IS A BUDDY MOVIE WITH YOU AND WART AND YOU VISIT ALL KINDS OF PLACES AND MAKE CASSEROLES AND SHARE THEM WITH PEOPLE AND MAKE FRIENDS EVERYWHERE THAT’S MY KIND OF GAME.

True story: I was so obsessed with Super Mario Bros. 2 that I wrote poetry about it and drew pictures of it (and I can’t draw AT ALL), and one magical Christmas, my dreams came true.

You know what? I may just boot up my original NES this weekend and play some Super Mario Bros. 2! GD that sounds fun. OR! I could hook up my NES Classic and play it on THAT since I haven’t used it yet! WAHOO!!

AND!

I could play some Dr. Mario because I adore Dr. Mario and I’m sort of ruthless at it and I’m not much of a ruthless person so I sort of enjoy that there is one thing I might be ruthless at and that it’s relatively benign.

Another true story: I was once at my favorite arcade back in Portland (I MISS YOU GROUND KONTROL) and I was playing Dr. Mario on their cabinet. My friend Craig was there and he’d wandered up behind me and was watching. I will never forget the disbelief in his voice as he said, and I quote, “HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD AT THIS?” I think I just said something like, lots of practice, but I always enjoyed how baffled he was at my Dr. Mario skills.

And that’s as close to a humble brag as you’ll get from me.

This weekend I’m hoping to knock out the last DLC for the Borderlands remaster (I just finished the plat for it this week), and go straight into Truberbrook, a super neat looking game that just released on console. I’m also open to just starting something unexpected. I will also be painting more! Next up is a piece all about fluorescent red. I’m excited to see how it turns out. In theory. If it sucks, I probably won’t be too excited.
