Brief Thoughts On Yesterday’s Borderlands News

Yesterday brought the most Borderlands news we’ve heard in a while. I skipped the livestream (which I heard was a bit of a disaster) from Gearbox at PAX East, and picked up the highlights elsewhere.

The biggest news to ME was the announcement of the first Borderlands remaster…and that it’s dropping next week!!! THAT was the news I’d been waiting so long for. I already can’t wait. There will be quality of life improvements in addition to a visual upscale, but really all I want is to take screenshots of it on my PS4. The first Borderlands is my favorite Borderlands, hands down.

The ironic part of all this is that I JUST subbed to PS Now so I could play the first Borderlands on my PS4. Oh, me.

Now, then.

We all knew Borderlands 3 was in development. Randy Pitchford had talked about it off and on. It was announced. It wasn’t announced. It was confirmed to be in development. It wasn’t confirmed.

After all that back and forth, I lost excitement. Then with the Pitchford debacle not long ago, I started to wonder: what is even happening at Gearbox? We all know how Aliens turned out. We all know how Battleborn turned out. On top of that, in the past couple years, they lost some of the key creators of the Borderlands franchise.

The trailer (below) was solid, but it also looks like more of the same. I’m not a game developer, so I’m unsure how innovations would be made, but it’s been seven years since Borderlands 2, and we’ve had a new generation of consoles since then. I supposed I’d been hoping to see something that indicated growth.

Don’t get me wrong, I will still play the game (I’ve played the first over two dozen times; the second, which I liked far less, around the same), but my excitement is tempered.

I actually liked the Mask of Mayhem trailer more than the official reveal trailer:

I will also be curious to know a release date. I would hope the game is coming this year. Gearbox said there will be more news on Borderlands 3 on April 3rd (the same day the Borderlands remaster launches), so perhaps we will know then.

It also appears in celebration of the BL3 announcement, there was a Shift code for 100 gold keys in Borderlands 2. If you’re interested, I highly recommend checking out the Orcz site for golden keys.

I’m glad Gearbox has finally, officially (whatever that means at this point), announced Borderlands 3. I hope the game is coming this calendar year.

Some of the biggest news dropped yesterday (again, for me), was that Pathologic 2 FINALLY has a release date! It will release on May 23! So far it appears it will only be releasing on Steam, but I’m hopeful a console release isn’t far behind.

I’ve been wanting to play this game desperately since my friend T-Rex told me about it years ago. He was the first person I wrote to when I heard the announcement. I was like: IT’S TIME.

This weekend is going to be chock full of more Division 2 for me. The further I get, the more I like it. It’s not perfect (what is?), but it’s engaging as heck and the environments, color, and lighting are amazing.

With that I ask: how did YOU feel about the Borderlands 3 official announcement? What will YOU be playing this weekend?

Please be safe out there, friends. Cheers. <3

  1. Hi Rebekah!
I agree with you, I liked the Mask of Mayhem better than the Borderlands 3 trailer. It still looks like Borderlands in a good way. Don’t reinvent the wheel, just make it look cool.
    Keep up the good work!

    • I’m glad you also enjoyed the Mask of Mayhem trailer. I liked the character designs better in that one. The villains looked a lot more elegant in the Mayhem trailer and a little rougher in the official announcement one. I doubt we are seeing the game anytime soon, so who knows what changes will happen between now and then.

      Aw, thank you.

  2. It’s more Borderlands which is amazing. Really need to try out the pre-sequel sometime. One of my first memories of being a member of Overblood comes from playing 2 with some old,no longer, there members from the group.

    • I think the Pre-Sequel got a bad rap. It’s not terrible. At the worst I think it is completely okay. The O2 management can get annoying at times, but the jumps are fun. The Cryo weapons are also fun.

Oh wow, that’s so neat! Who were the members you played with?

  3. Gamer guilty admission, I’ve never played a Borderlands game. Given my glut of games to play, I’ve never bought a Borderlands game. After the multiple recent releases, the only game announcement I can think of that I’m waiting for is the release date for The Last of Us Part 2. For this weekend, I’ll continue in Anthem which I’m still enjoying but it has its hiccups, some worse than others. This past week, it froze during a mission, and while I appreciate that I haven’t lost progress when the game freezes, I missed a pivotal cut scene and I had to look it up online. Game on this weekend!

    • Oh my gosh, with so many games out there, there is NO NEED to feel any kind of guilt about that! If you do wind up playing one, I’d definitely steer you towards the first game over any others.

I know some folks who feel sure TLoU Part II is coming this year, but I don’t see it. I have a feeling it will be a cross-gen title, so I’m thinking we see it after they announce the PS5…whenever that happens. I’m kind of wondering if all of Sony’s heavy hitters we know about will follow suit.

I hope you continue to enjoy Anthem, but oof, that sounds really frustrating.
