As many of you know, yesterday marked the debut of the Destiny 2 reveal trailer. As someone who has sunk many hundreds of hours into Destiny over the past three years, I was right there, keen to see what Bungie had to show us of the next installment.
I was not disappointed with the trailer.
I was, however, mildly disappointed with two strange, and minor things: the logo and the box art.
Destiny has some of the most beautiful game art around and you’d never know it by this box art. The logo looks bland. The new box art looks so bland that when it was leaked not long ago, I thought it might not be legit because of how bland it looked.
What we have here is…strange. I’m not sure who this is being marketed to. First of all, the name of the game still surprises me: Destiny 2. I thought for sure we would see some sort of colon situation like, Destiny: The Traveler Wants Us Dead, or, Destiny: The Light Was Inside Us All Along. Instead it’s simply: Destiny 2.
And please, don’t get me wrong; I adore Destiny and I’m incredibly excited for Destiny 2. I’m just surprised this is the route they went on the title.
The other strange thing here are those three people on the cover. They all appear to be human.
Why?
There are three races: Awoken, Exo, and human; why are they not represented here? And why are none of these people wearing helmets, anyway? In just about every other piece of Destiny marketing, guardians are wearing their helmets.
Basically, this box art is confusing. The name, the logo, and the three people dressed in mostly grey are throwing me off. Destiny is a gorgeous and colorful game, and you’d rightfully never guess that was the history based on what we see here.
Perhaps there is a reason. Who knows.
What was also announced was the collector’s edition of the game (as seen at the top of this piece). As soon as I knew there was one, I wanted it. But it isn’t available anywhere yet.
Which is probably for the best.
The more I look at it, the more I’m not sure I should take the plunge.
First of all, the price is steep. Easily the highest priced collector’s edition I’ve wanted for a game: $249.99.
Now, if I was completely sold on everything included, I’d be scouring the internet trying to find a way to buy it. But I’m hesitant. First of all, I’m not sold on that bag. I want to like it so much more than I actually do. There’s too much going on with the design. Do I like the idea of a satchel for my laptop that also has a solar charger? Yes. Do I like that it is Destiny themed? Absolutely.
Do I like the actual bag? No.
So I suppose there’s that.
I know I definitely want to pre-order the base game with the expansion pass (as will my partner), but that’s as far as I’ve gotten.
Then there are more things to consider, such as: where will I buy it from?
Since we will be purchasing two copies (one for each of us), it would be more cost effective to get them from Amazon due to the Prime discount. The only hiccup there is that if we pre-ordered them from GameStop instead, we could pick them up at faux midnight release and play them earlier than we could if we were waiting on the release day delivery.
Of course we would pay more, but is that a suitable trade off for getting the game in hand potentially 24 hours sooner?
I think it might be. At least for me. If I know everyone is out there playing Destiny 2 and I’m sitting there just thinking about everyone else playing Destiny 2, well, that’s a special kind of bonkers for me. I want to play it as soon as humanly possible (I’m so excited for the beta!). As of right now, I’m leaning towards GameStop for the convenience alone.
I’m still tempted by that collector’s edition but, if I stop to think about it, I really don’t need it. I think I actually like the box it all comes in more than the bag itself. And the price is too high to justify the purchase.

Hey Rebekah! Doesn’t surprise me that this was today’s topic of discussion. I expect to hear more once the game actually releases. I am interested in seeing how they follow up from the original game. They might even get me back into playing Destiny again. Time will tell!
As for me, I’ll just playing some more Andromeda here. I have mixed emotions about the game. I like what I have played so far. Not sure when I’ll get back to playing Horizon. Hope you enjoy Everything. To answer your question, I have never been interested in a game enough to warrant purchasing the Collector’s Edition. I can understand the rationale behind it for that segment of the gaming population that does. :)

Ha! I am predictable when it comes to Destiny! With the same team behind The Taken King at the helm, I think this is going to be more along the lines of the Destiny that so many people wanted.
That makes sense to me, too, though. I’m definitely not one for wanting things (besides books) to be sitting on a shelf, but occasionally I’ve fallen prey to a special edition or two. My favorite special edition item has actually been the Destiny Taken King PS4. It’s beautiful!
I hope you have a good time with Andromeda and whenever you feel like it, Horizon will be there waiting for you. :)

Having mixed emotions about Andromeda; trying to make minute progress. I am about 7h in. I am on Haval(sp.). The planets are beautiful; the characters are decent; the story needs work, imho!

The last collector’s edition I bought was for Horizon which I really wanted. I will play Andromeda and Overwatch.

I have not been tempted by a collector’s edition. Unless/until I live in an area with less-than-reliable internet, I’m not particularly attached to physical discs, guides, goodies.

I’m an utter sucker for special editions of games. Now $250 is out of my price range. It’s the $100 editions that get me. I’m saddened that the $100 Destiny edition with the physical goodies is only sold at GameStop and so I cannot get the 20% discount that I can at Amazon or Best Buy. But that Cayde 6 figure that comes with a preorder at GameStop has me considering the preorder. Like I said, I’m a sucker.

I used to buy collector’s editions fairly often but now it’s a much rarer occurrence. My attitude changed when I preordered the Bioshock Infinite Somgbird edition. After laying down $150 I was asked if I wanted to spend another $20 on the season pass and I got so disgusted with the thought I stopped preordering games altogether and only buy season passes when they’re on sale or wait for the complete editions.
My only exception to this are Atlus games since they’re usually limited runs in general and their special editions are usually reasonably priced and have soundtracks which I love.

I’m with you. I used to be a lot more likely to buy one, but now I try to reason it out.
I can see why that would be off putting. Particularly since the season pass was lackluster and the content took so long to release. Don’t get me wrong, I loved BioShock Infinite, but I felt the DLC was handled poorly.
Atlus has some of the most unique special editions out there. I love them. If it has an art book and a soundtrack, I’m sold.

I have absolutely purchased collector’s editions of games! Although, now that I have a son I am keeping those frivolous purchases at a minimum, if existent at at all. Basically, they have to come with something AMAZING at this point; something that could be displayed on the shelf with pride. I doubt I’ll be getting the special/collector’s of Destiny 2, but……oh, it is oh so tempting!

I’m definitely not getting the collector’s edition, but I apparently missed out on the limited edition from GameStop I had wanted. It sounds like they sold out of it super fast. Darn, darn, darn!
