Status Report: Week 34 (YEAH BUOY)

The title says it all: my game challenge is going well! YEAHHHHHHHHH BUOYYYYYYYYY!!!

So far this month, I’ve completed six games:

Dear Esther
Burly Men At Sea
Far From Noise
Nex Machina
Superhot
What Remains Of Edith Finch

My challenge for the month of August is to complete ten new-to-me games, and I’m pleased to say I’m well on my way to that goal; later today, I hope to add at least one more game to that list. We returned from holiday last Tuesday, and I dove back in to gaming as I didn’t get any done while away. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to complete this challenge, but when faced with public failure, I decided to haul myself into gear. Also, I told myself if I failed this month’s challenge, I wouldn’t allow myself to buy any more games until 2019.

Let’s be real: with Red Dead Redemption 2, Tomb Raider, and so many more games on the horizon, I had to get this challenge done.

It feels good to be having new experiences again. I know those are all shorter games, but I’m still a teensy bit proud of myself for hunkering down and actually playing games. I hope to keep this up, no matter the depth or breadth of the game.

Today, I’m going to keep this one short. Traffic has been down here, and I don’t want to bore anyone. Basically, I’m making progress and I’m going to keep doing that. :)

What are you hoping to play this week?

Please be safe out there, friends. Cheers!

  1. I’m hoping to find some time to game this week. With the amount of video editing I need to get done it’s gonna be tough. If I do get the time it’ll probably just be Mario Kart. Seeing that you played Superhot makes me want to replay it, such a good game.

    • I hope you get time to edit AND play games!

I really liked Superhot right up until the very last level. The difficulty spike was absurd. I looked online and apparently I was far from alone on that feeling. I had a great time with the rest of the game, though.

  2. Congrats on getting some games done.

This week, I hope to finish up 2064 Read Only Memories Integral on Switch for review and then maybe play some Fortnite, Shenmue I & II, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.

  3. PROGRESS, HELL YEAH! Keep it going!

Did you like Far From Noise? It looks interesting!

I just finished Dead Space 3 and now my gaming week will be all about SHENMUE! It feels good to have a chill game after the intense Dead Space experience. I know Shenmue isn’t that good, but it’s my jam! I will try some Sea of Thieves as well.

    Have a nice week!

    • Thank you! I’m hoping to! MOMENTUM!!

Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I’d hoped. I like the concept and the art direction, but the writing felt weak, and the dialogue choices felt strange and unimportant. I’m embarrassed to admit I fell asleep twice while playing it. :(

Yeah!! Nice work on Dead Space 3! Oh man, I hope you enjoy your Shenmue time! And I certainly wouldn’t say it isn’t good, but it’s definitely of that time, control-wise. I still love that it presents a lived-in world for the player to explore.

I hope you have a nice week, too!

  4. Jumping back into Mafia 3 sometime this week; looking forward to Spiderman soon. Also, I have been enjoying Luke Cage on Netflix in non-gaming news.

  5. Did you finish Nex Machina “properly”? I couldn’t deal with that true final boss for the life of me! Excellent game aside from that difficulty spike!

    • Other than the first section weirdly causing me significant motion sickness, I thought the game was fascinating and beautiful.

Honestly? Either What Remains of Edith Finch or Burly Men at Sea.
