Comfort Games (Amongst Other Things…)

borderlands scenic 01

I do not feel good. I woke feeling awful. I still feel awful. And now I’m at my computer pouring out my guts to the internet about how awful I feel. Physically. All I really want to do is go lay down and try to regenerate some semblance of health.

This got me thinking about comfort. A friend long ago told me she liked to leave Buffy the Vampire Slayer on in the background for “comfort noise,” and from there, the term stuck.

Since that time, so many years ago, I have come to identify my various forms of comfort, and I thought it might be a teensy bit appropriate for me to list them here beginning with my comfort game of choice (which will come as a surprise to absolutely no one who knows me): the original Borderlands.

borderlands new haven 01

There will always be an element to this particular game that I can’t quite put my finger on as to why it resonates with me very much now as it did the day I first played it.

When I don’t feel well (but well enough to play something) this is the game that comes to mind. When I’ve had a bad day or what have you, this is the game I want to play.

I may never be able to properly articulate my feelings on the game, but I’m glad it exists, and I’m glad I can occupy that world when I please.

the fog

My comfort movie of choice varies a bit at times, but more often than not, it tends to be John Carpenter’s The Fog.

I love horror movies in general, and this one in particular, even though it is perfect by no means. Perhaps it is because I’d love to live so close to the water, or that the atmosphere is rich. Whatever it is, this usually comes out for a viewing, even if I’m just listening to it.

pomerium book of hours

My comfort music of choice is probably a bit of an odd choice, though that’s fine with me. It is Pomerium’s Book of Hours.

I find this type of music particularly soothing when I am trying not to hurl all over the place. I can honestly say I have no idea why, just that I am grateful to have ears and grateful to have access to this music.

ikea ofelia blanket 01

This is my blanket of choice, the Ofelia blanket from Ikea.

It may look like bunched up nonsense, but it’s the most lightweight, yet perfectly warm blanket out there. It clings just right so you don’t have parts of you needlessly uncovered. It is the perfect comfort blanket. I have gone through several of these, and have also gifted this blanket numerous times to friends and family. Everyone loves it.

Thank you, Ikea, for affordable blanket wonderfulness.

mhic french vanilla cafe

This is my comfort beverage, this crappy powdered coffee from Maxwell House. I love it to death and could drink many cups of it a day.

mariage freres

And finally, my one “fancy” comfort: The Au Sahara green tea from Mariage Freres. I discovered Mariage Freres on a visit to Paris many years ago and I’ve loved them ever since. I now have to resort to ordering it from Paris and having it shipped here (fortunately it lasts quite a while), but it’s wonderfully worth it. It’s the most incredible tea I’ve ever had.

And with that, you have a completely random, and completely honest post. And if you’ll excuse me, I have a bunch of laying around to do.

I wish each of you a far better start to your weekend than mine. Cheers!

  1. That’s too bad, I hope you get feeling better soon. I know what you mean about comfort stuff. To be honest, I wish I had more. Throughout many of my teen years I used to watch the Star Wars trilogy to fall asleep, each night finding the spot I last remembered from the night before and continuing from there. I do have a definite comfort food. Grilled cheese sandwiches with hot tomato soup for dunking!

aww, see i love that. you had your star wars. honestly? the thing i listen to most to fall asleep is the blue stinger super replay, no joke. it’s gotten me through many an evening when i had trouble sleeping. :)

OMG GRILLED CHEESE. i LOVE grilled cheese. i love it in a big ridiculous way. and i make crazy good grilled cheese. and now i WANT grilled cheese. and spicy tomato juice is my substitute for tomato soup, but i like it by itself.

      OMG GRILLED CHEESE FOREVER

      • It’s the best! I like getting fancy with my bread, sourdough is a good standby… One time I tried a dill rye, holy crap was that good! And I always spice it up to give it some kick with black pepper and Tony Chachere’s Cajun seasoning. Are you hungry yet? I’m starving!

        • sourdough is my standard for grilled cheese, but through the inventive use of two grilled cheese specific cookbooks i have (it’s true!) i have learned many tasty combos. mmm…

      • Now that I think about it, your watching past Super Replays to sleep is kinda genius. I’ve had nights recently when I could’ve used a good idea like that, now I’m psyched to try it.

        • it’s really great. blue stinger really does work the best, but i also think that was because of matt helegeson’s sonorous timbre. man, i will miss him at GI.

  2. You know, I’ve never thought about a comfort game for when I am sick, but now that think about it, that’s definitely when I’m most like to open up Animal Crossing on my 3ds. My usual ritual when I’m sick is to drink a full quart of orange juice (probably the only time I drink orange juice), eat a can of chicken and wild rice soup, and watch cartoons or youtube videos.

    • good call! i also love plopping down with my 3ds when i’m sick. and animal crossing is the best. :)

you know what’s funny? i only ever really drink orange juice when i go out of town. perhaps orange juice is only an “occasion” beverage?

your idea of comfort sounds very nice.

  3. Lol, comfort noise! I always call it musical wall covering, though it sounds nicer when I say it in Dutch (“muzikaal behang”). I do know what you mean though, when I’m down or not feeling well, there’s nothing that picks me up more than putting on the DVD of one of the older Star Trek movies with the original cast. No question about it, just hearing the intro tune already makes me feel better. By the way, I hope you feel better soon!
