Status Report: Week 13 (All That Matters Is Boomer)

THE DAY HAS ARRIVED!! Tonight at 9pm (here on the west coast) I will finally be able to pick up Far Cry 5 and Boomer and I will meet at last!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!

I mean, just look at him. He’s clearly a good boy. Or a good boi. Whichever you prefer.

I like both.

Looks like Ubisoft prefers “good boy.”

As predicted, I got nothing accomplished game-wise over the last week. A weird set of situations on Saturday even derailed my regularly scheduled Borderlands 2. So, really, I believe I played nothing at all other than a bit of Overwatch late Saturday night.

All I can think about is Far Cry 5. All I want to do is meet Boomer. I also want to meet Cheeseburger, the bear, but Boomer’s where it’s at for me. We are going to wander the lands of Hope County, Montana and bring justice to the land.

JUSTICE DOG.

On Friday last week, my copies of Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom and A Way Out both arrived, and I played absolutely zero of both. Again, my attention span is all about Far Cry 5. And I had allotted some possibility that I’d be able to play A Way Out over the weekend.

Ha. HA. AHHHAAAHHAHHAAAA.

Yeah. That was never going to happen, was it?

Since tonight’s the night, I am in full spaz mode. I apologize in advance because I’m pretty sure (read: certain) that everything I write this week will be Far Cry-related. Even whatever I write on Thursday. Well, maybe I can come up with something non-Far Cry for Thursday but please don’t count on it. I’ve been looking forward to this game in a BIG way since it was announced and as the time draws near, the excitement is becoming unbearable.

UnBEARable.

CHEESEBURGER.

CHEESEBURGER THE BEAR.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

I’m honestly trying to focus, but my own hype is muffling a lot of other thoughts. I’m so excited to see how the game functions without radio towers and the minimap. I’m excited to see how companions figure in to this entry. In Primal they almost made sense, but in a modern day Far Cry, I’m curious to see how they fare. I’m excited to see how the monetary system works (I’ve heard it’s harder to make money in this entry), and I’m incredibly glad hunting is no longer required to upgrade your items. The skill trees look interesting and useful, and I’m pretty much excited and interested in every change I’ve heard about.

I’m also super looking forward to co-op play. Yes, it’s disappointing that progress won’t carry over to the person who joins the other person’s game, but I’m hopeful that personal progression will (e.g.: unlocked skills). I already told my co-op partner that I will play during the day in my own game, then join him in his in the evenings when he can play.

Oh! I watched a video where Boomer’s thoughts are subtitled (I am a sucker for subtitled creature videos), and in it he refers to guns as “loud sticks.” He says he will “find the bad ones for you” (e.g.: he tags the bad guys), and asks you to please pet him sometimes because “We’re family now!”

How freaking adorable is that?!

Boomer: I’m ready to be your family. Let’s do this! Let’s get those bad guys!

With that I ask: what will you be playing this week?

If you need me, I’ll be in Hope County with Boomer. And Cheeseburger.

Cheers, friends!

  1. Oh man I’m so ready! I did read that your personal progress; cash earned, guns obtained, and skills acquired will stay with you. It only mission/story progress that doesn’t so that’s something at least. I Can’t wait to play!

  2. Just finishing up TT’ Batman before God of War releases next month. It’s been an interesting episode 4. Looks like the Joker might be a friend; not familiar foe like in the comics; time will tell! Decisions, decisions, decisions!

  3. I’m trying to finish off Nier: Automata soon. It’s a game that I feel like I can platinum and it’s keeping me on it longer than I would be normally. It’s been an interesting game in terms of narrative but sometimes the design choices can be annoying. I knew going in that the game needs to be replayed multiple times to get the true experience but I think that doesn’t come without some consequences for individual players in terms of patience and ability to make that kind of investment.

I’m looking forward to all the Far Cry 5 posts, with all the excitement you’ve had for it I would be shocked if there wasn’t anything about it now that it’s out. Hopefully I’ll be able to get into it soon so I have a better frame of reference for what you talk about. Enjoy Far Cry 5!

    • It’s interesting that you say that about NieR. I was wondering about how that worked. Do you have to replay the entire game each time? Or only parts of it? I don’t fully understand and I really want to play it, myself.

Wheee! Thank you! :) And I hope you are able to get to it, too, should you so desire. It’s not quite what I expected, but I’m hopeful. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

      • Without spoiling too much, the narrative is split into two large sections. You start the game as one of a pair; once you reach the end of the narrative, the option opens up to repeat the same sequence of events as the other half of the pair. There’s some slight deviation based on character point of view, but overall the story is the same exact thing. After completing it again, the second act opens up and you play as two again except this time there are split events happening, meaning both characters experience different things and eventually meet at the end.

That’s what I find most interesting/frustrating with the game narratively. If someone decided not to play the entire first half over they never would have experienced the entire second half of the game. Yes, you’d have the benefit of knowing where to go and what to do, but it still takes several hours to do so even if you ignore all the optional side content added. I’m glad it worked out for Yoko Taro since the game was very highly regarded last year and considering how many amazing games came out in 2017 it was a huge risk to block off half his narrative like that.
