My Top Ten Most Anticipated Games Of Fall/Winter 2016

the last guardian 01 cover

As I was doing my cursory roundup of all the games I have on pre-order for the foreseeable future, I started to see what my fall/winter gaming is going to look like. With so many potentially excellent games lined up for the remainder of 2016, I thought I’d assemble my top ten most anticipated games here to share.

Here we go!

resident evil 4

#10: Resident Evil 4   (08.30.16)

Believe it or not, I’ve never played RE4. I know, I know. I’ve always wanted to, and the impending version for current gen seems like the perfect time to dive in. I’m looking forward to finally experiencing this classic.

psycho pass mandatory happiness

#9: PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness   (09.13.16)

Since I first read about this title, I was hooked. I haven’t seen the anime series this was based on, but depending on how the game shakes out, I may end up looking into that, too. The setting of a dystopian future where everyone’s mental state is on display fascinates me.

dead rising 4 01

#8: Dead Rising 4   (12.06.16)

I tried to get into Dead Rising 3 when I first got my Xbox One, but I just didn’t click with it. I’m hoping Dead Rising 4 is the entry that gets me in the door.

I love the series’ irreverent tone and overall silliness. I’m also super into the Christmas theme for this one. And hopefully I find people to play with, as I’d love to experience the game with a friend.

yomawari night alone 01

#7: Yomawari: Night Alone   (10.25.16)

From the moment I read that the adversaries in this game were inspired by Japanese urban legends, I was hooked. The fact that you are playing as a little girl who is searching for both her dog as well as her older sister, only furthered my interest. The art style is intriguing and I can’t wait to give my Vita something to do with this release.

deus ex mankind divided

#6: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided   (08.23.16)

From the moment that I heard the same team who worked on the Thief reboot was working on this game, I was on board. I know Thief wasn’t perfect, but I had a stellar time with the game. One level in particular (the asylum) stands out as one of the most unnerving and well done levels in any game I’ve ever played. I can’t wait to see what they bring to the Deus Ex table.

pokemon sun

#5: Pokemon Sun   (11.18.16)

One of my favorite 3DS games was also my very first Pokemon game: X. I spent well over 100 hours with that entry, and it made me an instant fan of the series. Since I first heard about Pokemon Sun/Moon, I was intrigued by the island location. I’m also excited to see the new versions of older Pokemon in action.

the last guardian 02

#4: The Last Guardian   (10.25.16)

Something about the Trico (the creature) deeply moves me. He seems simultaneously strong and fragile. I instinctively want to protect him. Every time I see him in action, I get choked up at his creature majesty.

I will do everything I can to keep him safe, come October. And so help me, if Team Ico kills him off during the game, I will be a mess.

destiny rise of iron

#3: Destiny: Rise of Iron   (09.20.16)

I love Destiny. I’ve loved it since I first played it upon release. Its hooks in me run deep. It has the smoothest gameplay and tightest gun mechanics of any game I’ve played…ever. I just love it.

Rise of Iron isn’t only a welcome set of fresh content, it looks amazing in its own right. I can’t wait to dive in.

bioshock the collection

#2: BioShock: The Collection   (09.13.16)

The original BioShock reigns supreme as my favorite game of all time. The fact that I can soon go back to Rapture and see it in all its remastered glory is an invitation I won’t be able to resist. Rapture is one of the most atmospheric locales in all of video game history, and I marvel at the descent every time.

dishonored 2 emily and corvo

#1: Dishonored 2   (11.11.16)

From the moment Dishonored 2 was announced, it became my most anticipated title of 2016. Period. I had no expectations going into the original, and I loved it. The art style was strong and left an impression. The gameplay was unique and allowed for many options. Sure, every time I tried to stealth my way through an objective I failed miserably and had to go high chaos, but that didn’t make me enjoy my time in Dunwall any less.

I can’t wait to try my hand at playing as Emily this time around. Her skill set looks amazing. November 11th will be a glorious day, indeed.

Which games of 2016 are you most excited for? Which will you be playing upon release?

  2. I am most definitely guilty of eyeing too many games this fall when I’m still playing last fall’s games. My list includes Titanfall 2, I enjoy FPS games but I’m not always good. I absolutely loved Titanfall and I’m thrilled to play in the open technical test this weekend. My only disappointment is that the deluxe edition only adds skins for an extra $20. I’m all for spending money on the game but the collector’s edition is steep. Also, I’m not sure who to pick to play as in Dishonored 2!

    • I know that feeling all too well! Shoot, I haven’t even played Fallout 4 yet!

That does seem steep for the Titanfall 2 edition if it only comes with extra skins. How odd.

I hear you on Dishonored 2. I think I may actually play it twice, once as each character. It looks amazing.

  3. I can see myself possibly picking up every game on your list. That’s both a good and bad thing in terms of the sheer wealth of amazing games coming up and the stress on my wallet. I’m most looking forward to Ace Attorney 6, Titanfall 2 and The Last Guardian. I’ll most likely end up with the Skyrim remaster and Bioshock collection too. Even though I’ve sunk countless hours into both I’d be more than happy to do it again with a new-gen makeover.

    • Oh gosh, the cost of this fall/winter is painful. That’s not even including PSVR (which I’m still on the fence about).

I can’t wait for The Last Guardian. Though, I have to admit, my stomach tenses up every time I think about it because I’m afraid they are going to kill off the Trico.

I’m right there with you on BioShock and Skyrim. I watched my partner play through all of Skyrim, but I never played it for myself. This is my chance! I want to talk to dragons, too…
