Screenshots: Take 15 (The Division 2 Edition)

As I absurdly wrote about last week, I’ve been taking a ton of screenshots in The Division 2. Between the lighting, locations, and particle effects, this game is gorgeous to photograph.

I’m no stranger to my love of screenshots, and The Division 2 has me taking them even when I put myself in peril to do so. YOLO! Totally worth it.

Also, I already feel weird about saying YOLO.

YOLO.

Here we go!

Also, there are no spoilers here other than perhaps super minor environmental spoilers, so, there’s that.

Okay, NOW here we go.

.

How you can tell you’re playing a Ubisoft game: by how much of your screen is obscured with information. I don’t think there’s enough going on, here.

.

I am a HUGE sucker for red lighting in any form. This elevator shaft was GORGEOUS. I stood there for a while.

.

The same goes for this hallway.

.

I thought this looked terribly dramatic. That was a fallen enemy from a firefight; a moment after I took this, the body dissolved and disappeared.

.

I am on the left (holy god that shirt), and my regular co-op partner is on the right (holy god that tank top).

Also: THE FUN STARTS WITH A DRINK OF COLA.

.

As great as the game often looks (and it really does look amazing most of the time), there is still a significant amount of pop-in. The tree in this picture looked like that for nearly a full minute. Who says Sony isn’t supporting PS2 on PS4?

.

F this area looked so rad.

.

What a nice hat.

.

Some of the locations in the game have been striking; this was certainly one of them. It almost looked too real. I felt like I was in Wes Anderson’s The Division.

.

I find this terribly amusing.

.

Another example of the gorgeous lighting in the game.

.

I am a huge sucker for mannequins in horror media. Even though The Division 2 isn’t a horror game, I feel the mannequins are used to excellent effect.

.

Yet another example of the excellent lighting effects.

.

I had a very David Lynch vibe here.

.

I am also a huge sucker for color saturation; between that and the lighting, I am often dragging our progress down just to take more screenshots (sorry, Degan!).

.

I mean, how RAD does that look?!

SO RAD.

.

The raccoons in The Division 2 are magic. I will often see one on top of a garbage can, and when I get close, they will dive into some trash portal and fully disappear. I found this one just enjoying a patch of sun.

.

Okay, SERIOUSLY, what’s going on here? A plush turtle with mammoths on his back and a disc on top of THEM? Why is the astronaut there? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

.

In the same vein as the mannequins, I also love the eerie use of spacesuits.

I also dream of a spacesuit of my own one day. A real one I can wear. With a space helmet.

.

There is still so much more to The Division 2 I haven’t seen, and I feel sure there will be another entry of screenshots. The color saturation and lighting will make it impossible for me not to.

What is the most recent game you’ve gone on a screenshot bonanza with?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play more of The Division 2. The screenshots won’t shot themselves.

Cheers!

  1. I took a lot of screenshots in Assassins Creed Odyssey. I did it partly for me, but mostly for Annie. She even said I take great landscape pictures, which made me super happy. I’m honored.

Your “Wes Anderson” picture reminds me of John Carpentef’s Ghosts of Mars.

I have only taken a few so far, but I’m gonna take more screenshots of Generation Zero.
I actually took one for you earlier. Remind me to send it to you 😂.

    • Aw, that was really nice of her, and of you to take them for her! I’m looking forward to playing that, myself, one day.

Oh, interesting! I do love Carpenter. Which just reminds me I want to watch The Fog again (my favorite film of his).

Aw, thank you! I took a few of it, myself, but I didn’t wind up playing it that long, unfortunately. More on that tomorrow. :(

  2. When I played the beta/demo thing pre-release the game didn’t really present me with any of this use of color. Your screenshots show a wonderul range of lighting and color though and I’m quite impressed. Not impressed enough to run out and get the game but visually it looks quite striking.

    • Oh man, there are some gorgeous colors and lighting effects in the game. I will do my best to capture more as I go along (though I often wind up asking my co-op partner to wait for me while I get the shots!). And thank you!!

  3. A lot of those were not at all what i would’ve expected from what i would’ve thought was a “straight up” (if post-apocalyptic) shooter. The red lit and “Lynchian” chair ones; especially striking.

Four (World) Elephants on the back of a (World) Turtle, i believe, has its origins in Hindu mythology.

    • Isn’t it gorgeous? It really is so much more striking than the first game, at least to me. I’m definitely spending more time with the photo mode than in maybe any other game that has one. The light, color, and environments are so gorgeous. Certainly not everywhere, but sometimes I just stand there going WOW.

Interesting! Someone (via Facebook) told me it is a direct reference to a book series called Discworld, but I wonder if Pratchett (the author) took it from there? Interesting!
