Status Report: Week 35 (More Than I Could Have Hoped For)

Look at that face; that’s Emperor Calus from the Leviathan raid in Destiny 2. As soon as I saw the art above by deadwither, I knew I had to use it for this piece.

As many of you know, I play a lot of Destiny 2; probably a little too much. Despite that, my regular fireteam and I had never even attempted the raid. This is surprising; even more surprising considering we used to raid regularly in the first game.

I know all three of us had wondered if we would ever be able to actually make a go of the raid or either of the raid lairs.

Fast forward to yesterday.

Someone who I made friends with through Game Informer’s website many years ago (and, later, a Facebook group which was created around their video series: Super Replay) had wanted to join the clan I made at the onset of Destiny 2. Of course that was wonderful to me, and it was even more fun when he recommended others join the clan. I’d known of them through the same Facebook group, yet none of us had ever played together.

The three of us from our regular fireteam connected with three of them, and we not only made it through the raid, but we also made it through one of the raid lairs! Two things I wasn’t sure would ever happen, finally happened! Not only that, but all three of them (four, because one of them had to swap out towards the end) were a joy to play with. They explained the mechanics wonderfully and were entirely patient while we adapted to the tasks at hand. They were kind and generous with their time, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I genuinely hope we can team up again in the future.

What a truly lovely surprise.

In addition, I’m THIIIIIIIIIS close to finishing my self-imposed challenge to complete ten new-to-me games by the end of August. I’ve finished nine! My goal today is to finish that last game (I think it’s going to be Asemblance: Oversight) so I can start in on some longer games and not have to feel the pressure to finish them quickly. I’m also really excited to finally be able to play Donut County tonight at 9pm when my pre-order unlocks!

So far, here are the nine titles I’ve completed:

Dear Esther
Burly Men At Sea
Far From Noise
Nex Machina
Superhot
What Remains Of Edith Finch
1979 Revolution Black Friday
Anamorphine
The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit

I know Captain Spirit is a demo, but if Game Informer saw fit to review it, I’m considering that a game.

I’m not going to lie: it feels really good to be making some progress, not only in my challenge, but with my backlog as well. I had been in such a slump where I was seemingly unable to start new-to-me games, and feeling more comfortable in doing so feels really nice. I’m grateful for that, too.

This week I will be finishing up some of my Solstice checklist in Destiny 2, playing Asemblance: Oversight, Guacamelee 2, Donut County, Shape of the World, and, hopefully, FINALLY starting Murdered: Soul Suspect. That’s a full week!

With that I ask: what will YOU be playing this week?

Please be safe out there, friends. Cheers.

  1. Oh man it was so worth staying up late to get that stuff done! I’m still so pumped about it. Those guys were amazing and I have high hopes for the raid stuff I’m Forsaken.

  2. I couldn’t make it through your piece, a first for me. I’m too full of self pity. You see, I was one of the missing players from the other raid group and now I am sadness.

Glad you had a good time! Those people are just the bee’s knees. Maybe I’ll catch you next time!

    • Oh NO! Aw, Rob, I’m so sorry. I hope we all get to play together far sooner than later. Please don’t be sadness.

They really ARE the bees knees and I’m certain you are, too. <3

  3. That’s awesome that you completed a raid. The closest I’ve ever come is the next to last stage of Vault of Glass. What do you play on PC, PS4, or XB1?

I may play Captain Spirit this week as well… it has been sitting on my hard drive for a bit and it seems like something I can burn through in a sitting. Aside from that, I’m going to continue playing Shenmue (which I have mixed feelings on) and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and I’m hoping my copy of Fire Pro Wrestling for PS4 shows up on my birthday so I can start in on that.

    • Aw man, you got that far in Vault of Glass but didn’t get to beat it? Darn!

We all play on PS4 and my regular fireteam used to raid often in the first Destiny. We did all the raids together pretty regularly, which is why it was even more surprising we hadn’t yet done the raid in D2.

If you play Captain Spirit, I hope you enjoy it. I liked it well enough but wasn’t bowled over, though it did pique my interest for the next chunk of Life is Strange. I will say, no other game has made my system run louder than Captain Spirit, weirdly enough.

Oh, when is your birthday? No matter when it is, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  4. I’ve had quite the emotional response to the raid activities from yesterday and it’s making me feel quite corny. It’s reminded me why I loved Destiny 2 in the first place, it’s a great co op experience that has allowed me to meet some really great friends once already and again with last nights victories.
It has also gifted me with a genuine mystery to solve, in regards to a certain festival, which I won’t get into here as I believe it merits its own blog post. You all were awesome to play with look forward to doing it again!

    • Honestly? I have, too. And I don’t think that’s corny at all! Sometimes I think about all the wonderful people Destiny has brought into my life, and I am humbled. I’m sincerely so pleased to have met you and I look forward to future gaming sessions! I can’t wait to show you guys the D1 raids! WHEEE!!! CROTAAAAAAAAA

Oh god. The chicken festival. It’s a mystery I’ve pondered for years. I feel like it has to be a Wicker Man situation or something.

I can’t wait to play together again, either! :)

  5. I’m so happy that your challenge is nearly complete, I knew you could do it! September is shaping up to be an amazing month for games. Dragon Quest XI, Spider-Man, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Valkyria Chronicles 4. Just to name a few.

This week I plan on playing Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker, and I’m making my way through Crossing Souls.
