Status Report: Week 23 (Five More Days)

It’s hard to believe, but we are five days out from the first press conference of E3 2018. The pressers kick off on Saturday morning with EA’s presentation.

I can’t put my finger on why, but I feel a strange, muted feeling about this year’s E3. I don’t know if it’s the calm before the storm, or because of all the leaks. I keep wondering why Bethesda would reveal such a major thing (Fallout 76) a week before their showcase. There has to be a reason. Also, I was in GameStop over the weekend and, while I was wandering around the store, I noticed the reveal trailer for Fallout 76 was already on their store reel. That means Bethesda was planning on revealing it early all along. This made me wonder even more. Bethesda already plays things close to the chest; why reveal this early?

All I can think is that it was a diversion to keep something bigger under wraps.

That could just be wishful thinking.

The games I’m most interested in seeing from E3 are Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, and Dreams (a game I feel I know less and less about the more I see it).

And, of course, the surprises.

My favorite aspect of every E3 is the element of surprise. I love when a game comes out of left field and manages to blow everyone away.

Over the past week I’ve played little other than Destiny 2. How I wound up roped back in, I have no idea. It has to be those darn Sleeper Nodes. I love their singing and glowing and spinning; I can’t resist them. Also, Bungie is having a presentation tomorrow regarding what year two will look like for Destiny 2, and I will surely be tuning in for that. If they can pull out a Taken King caliber expansion for year two, they will be on the right track.

I’ve also been playing the latest event in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp: Digby’s Artful Retreat. The gardening events are my least favorite (they are more time-intensive and seemingly have the worst RNG), and I thought we might get some differently styled events after the onslaught of fortune cookie microtransactions. Alas, that doesn’t appear to be so.

With the impending excitement of E3, I want to say I will celebrate in the most appropriate way possible (by playing games), but I fear I will just play more Destiny 2.

Also! There was apparently a leak that the original Borderlands is being rated for PS4 and Xbox One and, if that’s true, holy good gravy. The first game is my favorite in the series and one of my favorite comfort games, period. I sincerely hope that leak proves to be true. If so…oh goodness. I could see replaying that immediately. Hopefully it would run better on current gen hardware, as the Underdome in particular ran terribly on last gen. It was somewhat ironic Gearbox would make a horde mode DLC when the horde made the frame rate drop to zero frames per second. Alas. Hopefully they have made some improvements if it’s all to be believed.

With that I ask: what will you be playing this week? How are you feeling about E3?

Please be safe out there friends. Cheers.

  1. Destiny 2, Echo. I’ll be following your coverage, but I’m a bit ambivalent about E3. It generally works well as a showcase with passionate developers and audience, but it tends to showcase things that won’t be out in the near- to mid-term.

    • Thank you! And I think you probably have the right idea. I just get so excited about all the announcements. But I very much understand where you’re coming from.

  2. I’m still deciding what new game to play and am goofing about in God of War and Far Cry 5 currently. I tried some of the Arcade yesterday mainly to grind out some of the multiplayer trophies. God of War on the other hand, is starting to wear on me due to the combat. I want to find all the collectables and finish the other sidequests, but the combat is so frustrating for me.

It’s primarily due to the fact that even on normal difficulty the enemies hit way too hard. I’ve maxed out a set of pretty strong armor equipped with legendary enchantments and yet there are still enemies that can kill me in two hits. It makes me wonder what the point of having good equipment is if the game just ups the enemy difficulty 1-2 levels higher than you regardless. I also don’t like the camera being over the shoulder either. Kratos is so bulky he takes up half the screen and with attacks coming from all directions it makes keeping track of things extremely difficult on top of always feeling under powered.

I never really have any big expectations going into E3, however most times I come out pleasantly surprised by something. I’m sure that will be the case this year as well. As to who delivers on that, my guess is either Nintendo or Sony. Have a great week! I’m looking forward to your E3 coverage!

    • Oh boy, that makes me concerned about finishing God of War. Those issues sound…not so great.

I always try to lower my expectations for E3, but then I get swept up in all the hype and, before I know it, I’m spazzing out in real life all caps. :)

Aww, thank you! I hope to not disappoint.

      • I realize I’ve been complaining about the combat a lot, but I thought God of War was still a great experience story wise. If you stick to the story critical path, I think the enemies scale with you fairly evenly. That’s not to say you won’t die, but the game seems to punish exploration more which is weird since they took the time to make the game a lot less linear than the other ones.

I hope that I haven’t been scaring you away from playing God of War. That was never my intention.

        • I didn’t see it as complaining at all. The combat is a huge component of the game. It’s odd the game would be designed in such a way.

No, no, no! You weren’t scaring me away from it at all. I’ve just been rotten with playing anything lately. I’m in a big ol’ FUNK. BLURG.

  3. How do I feel about E3? Lots and lots of goodness is coming our way! Bethesda, Sony and Microsoft are the presentations I’m looking forward to. Nintendo I doubt will disappoint, but unless they come out of left-field with one of their staple franchises I doubt we’ll be seeing anything truly ground breaking from them. 4. Woooo hooo! It’s so close :) I just finished blogging about my excitement for E3 too. I’m really looking forward to Square Enix’s stream because it’s going to be immediately followed by a livestream with Naoki Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy XIV. Maybe they’ll announce the new expansion, the story of which has been under intense speculation in the XIV community. We’ll find out soon enough!

I’m also curious to check out Bungie’s non-E3 stream tomorrow. I sort of expected myself to get back into D2 in September if they did a Taken King-esque expansion to draw me back in. This could be it. Gonna be fun finding out :)

    • Less than a week!! It’s so exciting! And I hope Square’s conference (and the aftermath) is good to you!

I’m also very curious about Bungie’s stream. I will be watching it for sure.

  5. Still working my way thru GoW. Close to entering Tye’s vault; learned the identity of Atreus. Interesting!

    • Richard, you know I like you but for the love of all things holy PLEAS PLEASE PLEASE stop saying things about God of War. I haven’t gotten very far and now based on what you’ve said I know more than I wanted to. I didn’t even know Atreus wasn’t who he seemed to be. Please don’t say anything else about the game. I haven’t been able to play it and I’ve been trying really hard to avoid these kinds of things.

      • My apologies Rebekah! It wasn’t my intentions of saying that; thought you might have hinted at that in the treatment of Atreus by Kratos. Just my thoughts! I won’t say anything else; just know I plan to try & finish the game sometime in the next week; with E3 on the horizon it may get pushed into next weekend for sure.

  6. The tension is mounting for this year’s E3! What news and reveals will be waiting for us?

I have a feeling that Fallout 76 isn’t going to be what we think it is. It seems like it’s going to be a side project rather than the next core game in the series, perhaps something akin to New Vegas. Borderlands for current gen sounds interesting, I preferred the sequel, but that one was fun as well. It will probably be announced alongside Borderlands 3. We’ll get news on the stuff we know about, news on the new Smash Bros. is always exciting.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is a lot of fun! It’s been dominating a lot of my play time. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say for E3!

    • It’s been an interesting day for E3 so far!

I’m also curious about Fallout 76, but after Todd Howard talked about it at the Microsoft presser, it SOUNDED (heavy emphasis on that word for me) like a full on Fallout game. I suppose we’ll see later tonight.

I hope you are enjoying AC: Brotherhood! And thank you!!

    • Wheee! How is the World Cup mode?

Oh man, only a couple days left now to find out more about Smash! And I bet you see a lot more about Spider-Man tomorrow night!
