Status Report: Week 19 (The Doldrums, Take Two)

As I was getting this piece together, I was deciding on a lead and “The Doldrums” came to mind.

Immediately that gave me pause; I felt sure I’d used that same lead before.

So I looked it up and, sure enough, I had.

Not only had I used it, but I’d used it nearly one year ago to the day.

Weird.

The annual early May doldrums.

So, for continuity’s sake, I decided to use the same picture and everything.

This is all turning out weirdly perfect.

As you may have expected by now, I haven’t played anything over the past week other than Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and my regularly scheduled Saturday night Borderlands 2.

I’ve been having great success with my endeavors to get outside each day, though they continue to exhaust me physically. I’m hoping my system adapts sooner than later so I can stay up past than 7pm without falling asleep on the couch. On the plus side, I’m sleeping better than I have in a long time, and that’s a success all its own!

In Borderlands 2, we’ve made it through the first DLC and are about halfway through the second. I’m looking forward to getting to the Tiny Tina DLC; it’s the only expansion I really liked. I’m also looking forward to the Headhunter packs; they were bite-sized experiences and I loved the theming. One thing my co-op partner and I have been discussing is how dated the game has become. I’m having fun playing together, but the game itself has definitely lost a significant amount of its luster.

In Pocket Camp, I’m still ridiculously happy to have Maple at my campsite (I continue to bring her edible presents and the best bugs and fish I can find), and I’m enjoying the various seasonal activities. Right now I’m tasked with catching Appleflitters (butterflies that look like halved apples) during the Fruit Party With Katie event. And good old Gulliver has continued to disappoint me by not bringing me any of the new campers (I’ve sent him out on trips at least a dozen times). So it’s a mixed bag, but I do love that there is always something new going on. I’m also enjoying the various fortune cookies, though I am nervous about what this means for microtransactions in the inevitable next mainline Animal Crossing installment.

This week I’d like to finally, FINALLY get back to God of War (I AM A BROKEN RECORD), and I’d also like to surprise myself and start in on a smaller experience, perhaps an indie game picked at random. I’m in the mood to mix things up for myself. Known quantities are great, but sometimes an unknown quantity is a lovely thing.

I know this isn’t gaming related, but I’m hoping (by the weekend) to get back to the gym for the first time in far too long. Health is one of my top priorities right now, and I’d love to start working on improving it in even more tangible ways.

With that I ask, what will you be playing this week? Please let me know what you’ve been playing; my own gaming time has been so limited, I’m starved for this information!

  1. I’m playing through God of War right now. I’m enjoying it but I’m at the “I really want to finish this before it overstays its welcome” which is weird because I really love the game, but I’m always anxious to beat games and get to the next adventure.

Don’t know what I’m playing next…I have a few options on my backlog and I really want to get DKC Tropical Freeze because I haven’t played my Switch in a month.

I hope you can get back to the gym and get some videogame time! Have a good week!

    • It’s funny you say that because I’ve definitely had that experience with games in the past.

If you do decide on Tropical Freeze, I hope you enjoy it!

And thank you. I hope that, too! I hope you also have a good week!

  2. I’ll be playing God of War. Just dabbling it in some more. Been trying to stick to the main story arc. I like the premise; I have some unanswered questions so far. No spoilers please! Working on getting to meet Mimir. Yay!

  3. I’m still making my way through God of War but put it aside over the weekend to play and finish Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition. I had watched a let’s play of it and got an urge to play it myself though I had played the original version when it came out. It’s a fun but tough at times metroidvania.

I’m enjoying God of War a lot. The combat is much more difficult than I expected it to be but it’s still solid and will just be a matter of me getting used to it. I’m glad it’s being reviewed well and people are enjoying it. It seemed weird that many were sort of writing it off. Enjoy your outdoor/gym time and gaming!

    • Oh gosh, from one heavy story to another. I’ve always meant to play Ori. I watched Game Informer’s Test Chamber of it back when it released and I was already crying at the opening.

I’m so glad you are enjoying God of War! I have also been trying to adapt to the combat system.

      And thank you!

  4. Well… I actually managed to finish Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright over the weekend. It was a well done game overall, but I felt that the end dragged on for longer than it needed to.

I also started two new games recently. The first being Deadly Premonition, one of the most bizarre games from the previous generation, and the other one is Persona Q, another crossover of sorts.

Hope you have a good week!

    • I’m glad you finished it, but I’m sorry it wore out its welcome.

Oh man. Deadly Premonition. Never have I felt so much like a game tried to get in its own way more than Deadly Premonition. I’m glad I played it, and I sincerely hope you enjoy it, but I felt like some of the systems not only didn’t add to the game, but only made it more tedious (e.g.: driving, time limits).

Thank you! I hope you do, too!
