Last night I saw credits roll on Far Cry 5. The word that keeps coming to mind is WOW.
Don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything, but I will be talking about my feelings on the story as a whole and the ending, abstractly.
The Far Cry series is one of my favorite series. Far Cry 3, specifically, is one of my favorite games of all time.
I’ve played good games, I’ve played great games, and I’ve played some really awful games.
All that being said, the story of Far Cry 5 is one of the worst I’ve played in any game. Ever. And the ending, the ending of Far Cry 5 may be the actual worst ending of any game I’ve played (and Far Cry 3’s ending was bizarre). Ever.
After I finished last night, I just sat there feeling about as angry as I have ever felt at a video game. And I don’t often feel angry, period. I’ve never been more dumbfounded at story choices in a game. So many things made ZERO sense (and yes, that needs to be capitalized). I kept shaking my head like…is this for real? Is that really what just happened? I felt like everything I did in the game amounted to nothing.
And the boss fight itself was deeply underwhelming and stupid.
I feel like Far Cry 5 had so much promise, and I feel like it fell short on just about every aspect. The load times were consistently ridiculously too long. There were so many glitches and issues with regular gameplay (e.g.: Guns for Hire switching places on the D-pad). Being abducted from things you were in the middle of to be forced through story missions that also took too long which had you listening to monologue after monologue and not saying a word (!!!) because apparently getting a male and female voice actor would be too much (even though other series have done it just fine). Not giving the protagonist a gender neutral name so everyone in the game, even people you’ve just met, call you “Rook” or “Rookie.”
To be really honest, I could probably go on with my dissatisfaction about Far Cry 5 for a while. I will spare you and stop here. Suffice to say, I’m glad I got the season pass if for no other reason than to play Far Cry 3. I am hopeful about the DLC for Far Cry 5 but, after the base game, that hope is tempered. To the max.
I didn’t like Far Cry 5. And I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Even on sale.
You know who I really feel bad for? The hundreds of people who actually worked on the game. I have no idea how so much of the game was given the green light. I feel certain some (if not most) of the team at Ubisoft must have disagreed with what they were making. They put so much time and effort into this game, fully hoping it could be great and, instead, it turned out like this.
Okay. Now I’m done.
On Thursday night, as soon as I got home from picking up God of War at faux midnight release, I started it because I just couldn’t wait. I probably made it in a couple of hours before I set it aside because I knew if I didn’t, I wouldn’t get back to Far Cry 5.
Today I will get back to God of War. So far, it has been amazing. I can’t wait to play more.
With that I ask: what will you be playing this week?
I will be playing God of War, God of War, and a little more God of War.

Sorry to hear about Far Cry 5 being such a disappointment, you seemed to really be anticipating it. I’ll probably get to it at some point but I haven’t finished 4 or Primal so I figure 5 will be super cheap by the time I get around to it.
This week, I too will be playing God of War and striving to hit Tier 100 in the Fortnite Battlepass.

I think it was a real missed opportunity. The funny part is that I’ve seen people online who were like, eh, it’s fine, and others, like myself, who were more than a little disappointed.
My recommendation would be to play 4 first. Primal is okay, but certainly strange. 5 would be my last recommendation. Honestly, the heck with all that, I’d recommend to wait and play Far Cry 3 Classic Edition when it comes out!
Aww yeah! I hope you are enjoying God of War and I hope you reach that milestone in Fortnite!

I’m sorry: it sounds like a very frustrating slog. I hope God of War is all promise realized. I’ll likely continue on with Darksiders.

It was a weird experience, to be sure. I just have no idea what they were thinking.

I’m sorry to hear that Far Cry 5’s ending was so disappointing, especially since I’m also coming close to the end of it as well. I’m morbidly curious about it but due to the fact you rarely have bad things to say about any game I’m sure it must be really terrible.
I’ll probably feel the same since being literally dragged off to do the story missions is one of my least liked aspects of the game. Aside from some bugginess the exploration aspect is pretty fun.
I’m hoping to finish Far Cry 5 this week and hopefully pick up God of War on the weekend to start that. Enjoy God of War!

And I want to say thank you for that statement! I really do try to be as positive as possible about games, any game, so I appreciate that you recognize that!
Being dragged away from whatever you are doing to be forced through another cutscene monologue just saps away excitement. Also repeated cutscenes during a scripted segment do the same. What an odd game.
The moment to moment gameplay is mostly good for me. There are lots of glitches I’m experiencing, so that’s effecting things. Though I think the pet animals feature is my favorite thing about FC5. :)

Don’t you hate when a game is advertised one way; only for it to play out another. As for me, I’ll be playing God of War immensely; in spurts. That opening was epic, imho! The gameplay & combat is balances & challenging enough to progress; not to the point of stupidity or frustration.

I feel you on the frustration with FC5. Just finished it this morning and I was very confused/frustrated on the ending. I won’t go into specifics but for me I was struggling with what the game makers where trying to say with the game.
The bright spot for me was the shooting and vehicle control never felt so tight. No floaty vehicles and the gun didn’t feel like it weighed a ton like in 3 and 4. Also, the world was gorgeous and I was in awe the entire time. But the best part was no more towers!
That being said. Joseph Seed was lame. I never felt like he was the type of person that could get a cult around him. If he was charismatic, it would have helped his character a lot. Someone like a ted bundy or the Waco leader. Instead he was just a stereotype with a side of genocidial tendencies.
The siblings were just as bland except for faith. I felt bad for her with her back story but that I only found about through notes hidden throughout the world. The brothers were just another set of baddies that blabbled on and on.

After that ending, I’m pretty sure what they were saying (of course I’m inferring, but you understand) was nothing you did or do matters. What a neat thing to find out after 30 hours. Wheee.
Aww, I actually missed the towers, honestly. I prefer the structure of 3 and 4.
I agree about Seed. On all points. I also felt the same way about his siblings. I read a lot of the letters and such around and the Faith character/s struck me as deeply sad. And I swear, if I had to hear ONE MORE MONOLOGUE all up in my silent face…oh man. I was just ready for the story to be done. Yikes.
