Status Report: Week 38 (I Miss My Schedule)

I like sleep. I especially like regular sleep. As I get older, I find that I quite literally need to get eight hours of sleep each night. If I don’t, I feel miserable, physically.

Since the release of Destiny 2, my regular schedule has been completely wonky. I’ve often been feeling miserable, physically. I have been playing Destiny 2 when I should be doing other frivolous things like eating, writing, and sleeping.

It is catching up with me.

I typically write my pieces the night before I post them (e.g.: I am writing Monday’s piece on Sunday night), as I like having things done well in advance. This past week, I didn’t do that once. I was scrambling to write on the day of, and I am not a fan of that approach.

So, this week, my goal is to get back to my schedule so I don’t feel like garbage. All things in moderation.

I’ve been playing loads of Destiny 2 and, while I’m still enjoying myself, I’m starting to see more and more issues with some of the changes that were made to systems that were fine as is (e.g.: shaders, weapon and armor infusions). Even though I’m doing everything I should be doing to level up, the drops are all off. In OG Destiny, loot and engram drops were based on the level of gear you currently had equipped. This time around, Bungie said they would be based on your highest possible light level, even if those items weren’t currently equipped. Right now I’m light level 283, however every drop I’ve had for days is 274. Every engram, every reward, everything. It is infuriating. It is either a glitch, or it means I don’t need to play nearly as much since nothing seems to matter.

I also agreed to play Trials with three friends, and holy good gravy, we were TROUNCED. It was almost painful. Crucible has never been my favorite activity, and Trials is the Crucible turned up to 11. I did not have fun.

I also did not have fun the two times I tried to do the Nightfall and failed. This new time limit feature is so frustrating. I feel like so many things about Destiny 2 are about making changes simply to make changes. That’s something I can’t get behind. I feel like so much about the systems in the game that were streamlined by the end of OG Destiny’s run, have been rolled back to maximum frustration.

Case in point: I finally managed to find a pair of arms with a high enough level to infuse the pair I like. I went to infuse them…and it wouldn’t let me. It said the base power was too low…even though it was a higher level than the ones I was trying to infuse.

I was so frustrated.

Also, for weapons, you used to be able to infuse primary into primary, secondary into secondary, and heavy into heavy. It was simple and made sense. Now you have to infuse the exact same type of weapon into the exact same type of weapon. If I want to level up my sword, I have to find a better sword.

P.S. I have been trying to find a better sword for most of the week and I’ve not gotten one. It. Is. Infuriating.

Never mind that all the drops are dropping too low so even if I did manage to find a sword, chances are it wouldn’t be usable anyway.

URGGGHHH.

I’ve been doing the weekly activities and even they aren’t dropping usable items like Bungie said they would.

Basically, I’m terribly frustrated. I just don’t understand why these changes were made. They are taking the systems of the game in the absolutely wrong direction. After all the progress OG Destiny made over the three years since its release, this feels like a major series of missteps. I can only hope Bungie makes appropriate adjustments to this game, too.

In the meantime, Destiny 2 and I are on the outs a bit. Don’t get me wrong: I still love Destiny, I’m just super irritated by it at the moment.

This week, my goals are to do my writing on my usual schedule of composing them the night before, getting to sleep at reasonable hours, and trying to play Destiny 2 in moderation. I feel confident all those things are doable.

What will you be playing this week? What is the next big release you are looking forward to?

  1. I feel for you. I have a bad habit of getting into a game so much that I start to cut down how much I sleep, since half an hour doesn’t matter, right? But it does and eventually I start feeling groggy during the day and usually at that point I make a conscious effort to fix the sleep. And it works until I come across a new game that I just have to play a little bit longer than I should. I have been playing Warframe, which is free to play, and it seems pretty fun and not too terrible even if you don’t pay anything. But I’m really looking forward on playing next episode of Life Is Strange: Before Storm when it finally releases.

    • On one hand, I love when a game is so engaging that other things fall away. On the other hand, the older I get, the more I realize I NEED that sleep and as much as I love a game, I have to sometimes force myself to turn it off for the night. But I totally get what you are saying about just a half an hour more. Oh man, have I ever done that!

I’m glad you are enjoying Warframe! And I hope Life is Strange’s next episode is a good one!

  2. Man, Destiny 2 sounds like such a mixed bag. Every change I’ve heard about seems to have been arbitrary and for the worse. Hopefully they fix some of that, because that sounds really lame.

As for what I’ll be playing… I dunno. I’m in the middle of replaying StarCraft all the way through for the umpteenth time, I have at least half a dozen games loaded and ready to go on my PS4, and somehow I just can’t stop freaking playing Dark Souls 3!

    • It really is. As a player since day one, I saw the original release and the painfully slow grind and how they eventually backed off of that. To see certain aspects of it back (and with a flawed drop system no less) is disheartening. It makes me wonder why I’m even playing. And I want to keep playing as I ask myself that. It’s a very confusing feeling.

I hope you continue to enjoy StarCraft and your zillionth playthrough of Dark Souls 3. You got those mad dodging and jumping skills.

  3. Sleep is a must. I completely agree. It may be hard to come by for me this week. I just can’t get out from under deadlines. As far as gaming, something inexplicable occurred to the copy of Destiny 2 that my brother bought me. While that mystery is solved, I bought a copy at Best Buy. On one hand, I really wish I had time to play it this week! On the other hand, seeing that elements of the original slow grind have returned really has me confused. The game has an addictive loop no doubt. However, I’ve no desire to be angry after grinding for gear that didn’t drop. I’m still early in the campaign and I’m hoping that by this weekend I’ll be able to play awhile. Make sure to sleep!

    • Oh man, even MORE deadlines? How are you ever going to get caught up on rest?

I’m sorry your original copy of D2 went AWOL, but I’m glad you have one now! I think you will enjoy the campaign. And I hope they amend the grind. I’m still puzzled, though I have made it to 285ish. If you need or want people to run with, the clan chat seems to be pretty good! Also, the clan just reached rank 3 so now public event rewards are better! WHEEE!!

Please make sure to sleep, too!

  4. Hey Rebekah! Hate that you’re not enjoying the changes that were made to Destiny 2. Hope things take a turn for the better for you. I have yet to get into playing games. I have been saying that I will get to Batman season 2 & Uncharted. I have touched neither. Ugh! I just don’t feel like gaming; I want to play something. You ever feel this way? If so, how do you alleviate the issue? It sounds like that would make a decent blog topic, thoughts? I might go guns blazing into Uncharted; keep you posted as the week progresses. :)

    • You and me both! I hope Bungie is willing to amend some of those changes. I super hope.

Oh I absolutely feel that way from time to time. Sometimes I just feel daunted at all the prospects available, and I wind up playing nothing at all. Eventually, I just force myself to start one and that usually helps.

I hope you get into Lost Legacy and that you enjoy it!

      • Quick update: I have NOT jumped into Uncharted; I did play some Batman. Let me tell you it has definitely gotten darker. WOW! The Riddler is different than what you’d remember in the comic books. It’s something you’d have to see to believe. I like how season 2 has started out. I lost someone important to my team. Care to guess who?! Clue: It was a scientist who was played by Morgan Freeman in one of the Batman movies. Thoughts?

  5. That stinks that the loot grind in Destiny 2 has been reworked for the worse. I love RPGs but I’ll admit that’s usually one of the more annoying aspects of their game design and one of the main reasons I never got into MMOs. I can relate to the loss of sleep due to playing games. I try to avoid that, but every once in a while a game will get me and I pay for it the next day.

I’m still working my way through Yakuza 0 as my main game but am also playing Psycho Pass Mandatory Happiness and will also play Metroid: Samus Returns when it arrives in the mail. I hope the RNG treats you better!

    • Does it ever! I just have no idea what they were thinking other than: MORE PLAYER HOURS.

I’m right there with you on the sleep part. I’m usually good about forcing myself to call it for the night, but those times I don’t exercise that particular willpower…oof. I will certainly pay for it the next day. And then I think of that Lethal Weapon line: I’m too old for this sh*t.

OH MAN!! You are playing three games I’ve been wanting to play so badly! How is Yakuza 0 treating you? What about Psycho Pass? Have you received Metroid? Do tell!

And thank you. I would love that, but the RNG is rarely kind to me. Stupid numbers.

  6. A lot of things have happened since I’ve last posted a comment. I finally managed to finish Breath of the Wild, overall it was a fun game bogged down by some minor but constant annoyances. I also finished Soul Hackers on 3DS. As for what I’m playing now, I’ve started Sonic Mania and Shin Megami Tensei IV. I’m eagerly awaiting The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ to release on PSN.

    Have a great day!

    • Holy cow! A lot HAS happened! Also: welcome back! :)

I keep wanting to start Breath of the Wild, but I’ve heard several things about the weapon durability and that’s a mechanic I’m never into in games. Is that one of the things that bogged it down for you?

How was Soul Hackers? What do you think of Sonic Mania? SMT IV?

Goodness, you are playing all sorts of games; I love it!

Thank you! I hope you are having a great day as well! :)
