Status Report: Week Thirty-Four (Midir Sucks)

When I found that I loved Dark Souls 3, I surprised myself.

This past weekend, I discovered the incredible frustration certain bosses can cause. Namely, the supreme jerk, Darkeater Midir.

For those who aren’t familiar, Darkeater Midir is a great big a**hole dragon. He’s an optional boss, but I won’t be satisfied until he is dead dead dead.

My co-op partner and I went in to battle and Midir roasted us…literally. And repeatedly.

We tried going in with the summoned phantom for help.

The phantom was little help.

We tried going in without the phantom.

We died and died and died.

I’m not going to lie: I got a little cranky. I was trying to do anything and everything to see if it worked and it didn’t. Midir can cross the arena in a flash, blanket the ground below him with fire, nail you from range with a laser that would make a Blood Dragon proud, and tail swipe you with incredible accuracy that seemingly can’t be blocked with a shield.

If I sound frustrated, it’s because I was.

I would barely get in there to attack Midir’s dumb legs or head and he would look down like, hey, I have a present for you, FIIIIIIIIIRE! Oh, that wasn’t enough? How about some TAIL SWIIIIIIIIIPE? That not enough? How about some LASERRRRRRRRRS?!

Not to mention the camera was the most frustrating it had been in the entire game. Locked on to Midir or not, it was a constant battle. I wouldn’t be able to see him, then I’d be stunned from an attack I didn’t see coming, finally get up and try to either dodge or estus, and get immediately killed.

Yay.

He is the only boss we have left and, while I’m looking forward to ultimately ruining his day much in the same way he ruined mine, I’m not exactly looking forward to seeing his frustrating dragon mug again.

The whole experience did make me think about what I’d do if I could mod games. I’d implement all kinds of changes that made the game more peaceful. I’d give my character the ability to Care Bear Stare any enemy with FRIENDSHIP and we could sit down and talk. I’d send in peaceful armies of puppies (DOG SOULS) to cheer all the baddies up. Maybe they are just upset there are no puppies in the world? I’d love to see some big scary enemy sit down and cry tears of happiness when they were able to hold a puppy and kiss and pet them. I’d make a rainbow “attack” that would cause enemies to think about why they were upset and murderous in the first place, and everyone could have a peaceful sit down over sandwiches and tea. Maybe they just need a hug? Who knows.

My version of Dark Souls would have a lot more giggles and a lot less death.

Anyway, Midir sucks. That’s all I have to say about that. I mean, clearly it isn’t all I have to say about that (as evidenced above), but I’ve covered it at this point.

I played some Ghost Recon: Wildlands and I’m feeling the urge to wrap it up. As much as I love playing with my co-op partner, the game is starting to get a bit repetitive and I’m tired of being spotted and killed in the time it takes me to say “Unidad.” I think the game has a lot of things going for it, but it also has a lot of flaws. I’m a bit surprised that Ubisoft hasn’t patched out some of the issues, but I’m sure I will be glad I played it overall.

I didn’t get to Wolfenstein at all. I didn’t play much over the week, honestly. I don’t have a good excuse.

As a quick side note for anyone who knew I had been sick since the beginning of this year, yesterday I went out for the first time recreationally since January! It was just a trip to the dog park, but I actually drove there (first time I’ve driven in about six months)! It was glorious to be outside. I am finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I can’t say how much of a relief it is. I may not be 100%, but I’m definitely considerably better than I was.

I’m hoping to get to Wolfenstein (big shock) and to really make strides on some 2017 releases this week. I want to level up my efficiency!

With that I ask: what will you be playing this week? Have you completed many 2017 releases? What is your game of the year so far?

  1. Congratulations on feeling better, I’m glad to hear about a fun new milestone on the path to wellness! Undefeated bosses are demoralizing, all of that effort only to turn off the game without the win is frustrating. However, I’m certain that you’ll take down that bossy dragon. Probably on your first try when you log back on. Over the weekend, I finished Uncharted 4, I struggled in the end a bit with the timing for the hand to hand combat but certainly not a Dark Souls level of struggle. This week my work scheduled is once again packed. I’ll aim to play for loot boxes in Overwatch and try to solo queue my way out of bronze as well as continue the pirate themes of Uncharted 4 by returning to my save in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. Also, sleep when I can manage it.

    • Thank you! It was glorious to be outside and not just on my way to another doctor’s appointment!

You’ve got that right! Having to admit defeat SUCKED. And he WAS a bossy dragon! A major jerk jerk jerk.

Hey, congratulations on finishing Uncharted 4! I hear you on the timing for that last section. I’m glad you emerged victorious!

Aww, work strikes again (still?)! I hope you are still able to get in some Overwatch. Oh man, Black Flag was so gorgeous and fun. I loved the homestead. I hope you have a great time!

      And yes, please sleep. :)

  2. We’ll get him next time!

Really though, if I’m playing solo, Midir is honestly one of my favorite bosses. But fighting him co-op makes him so much more difficult, and is honestly one of the more frustrating bosses because of it.

There are a few strategies you can use to kind of cheese him, so I might have to do that if he continues to give us trouble. Hopefully next time though, we’ll both bring our A games!

    • Man, I hope so. That dragon is mocking me with fire and lasers.

I’m glad he’s YOUR favorite, but I think he lands with a resounding thud at the bottom of my list. HE WAS A JERKBAG.

I will do my very best next time. I’m in research mode. I will exploit his weaknesses. And if I can’t do that, I will cheese the hell out of him.

Sometimes cheese is just the thing.

  3. I might not have any experience with Midir, but my time in Dark Souls has taught me that fighting dragons is usually a frustrating time. I’m sure you’ll beat him, it’s just a matter of time. It would be really satisfying to cut his tail off if he’s like the Gaping Dragon in Dark Souls.

Congrats on getting some time outdoors! I’m glad you’re feeling better and I hope you have continue to keep feeling better and enjoy many more outdoor excursions!

I’m continuing my journey through Yakuza 0 for the most part. I think I’ll be quitting Hollow Knight unfortunately. I’m having too many issues with the game design and I haven’t enjoyed my past few play sessions. I’ve completed a couple of big 2017 releases but there are still some big games I haven’t gotten to. My GOTY is Persona 5 and I’m not sure that will change despite some big upcoming releases, but anything can happen.

    • Oh man, anything that can fly is usually a pain, I agree. And I don’t think this one’s tail can be removed like the one you are referring to. This one’s tail is there simply to make my life miserable.

Thank you! I hope that, too! I’m so excited to be feeling better and better.

YEAH! I’m glad you are enjoying Yakuza 0, but I’m sorry about Hollow Knight. I hate that feeling where you’ve tried and tried but you just aren’t having any fun. I’ve definitely pushed through with games like that and, after the fact, wondered why I bothered since things just got worse. I think you did the smart thing.

Oh man, I really want to play Persona 5. It just looks so amazing.

  4. My game of the year is Horizon Zero Dawn. All the games I’ve finished this year are from 2017 I believe. I will be starting Uncharted the lost legacy once I get my copy.

  5. I agree with Colton on GOTY; although I didn’t finish HZD; it’s my GOTY pick. Just plan to continue to progress in SE; plan to get Uncharted: LL tomorrow; not sure when I’ll start playing it though.

  6. I’ve never played a Souls game, but this Midir fellow sounds like a real pain. I hope you give him a good thrashing.

Oh wow, you’re finally well enough to go outside! I’m so glad this sickness has stopped bothering you. You’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

This week, I’ll be playing LoZ: Breath of the Wild. I’m pretty much at the end, I just have to defeat the final boss. I’m also making fantastic progress in Soul Hackers. Persona 5 is pretty much a lock for my game of the year, but who knows what could happen.

    • I hope so, too! He is a great big jerk.

ME TOO. I can say I am a HUGE fan of fresh air and I hope to keep getting more of it.

Oh wow, well I hope the final fight goes well! And I love that Persona 5 is at the top of your list. I can’t wait to play it. It looks amazing.
