December Game Challenge: Week One (Oh Boy)

the-last-guardian-01

It could be better, and it could be worse.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way early: I haven’t even touched Dishonored 2 since last week. My plan to finish it before moving on to Titanfall 2 (so I could be ready for The Last Guardian on Tuesday) is super off the rails.

The good news is that I finished Pokemon Sun a few days ago and I loved it. I loved it so much that I’ve still been playing it. I’m enjoying simply filling up my Pokedex and evolving various Pokemon. Just last night I finally evolved a Leafeon, which was a little absurd to make happen, but was fun all the same.

Another thing I’ve been doing is continuing to level up my Poke Pelago. I don’t use berries ever, yet I’ve been meticulously planting and harvesting them. I’m only missing one improvement for the whole place, and I enjoy tuning in to watch my Pokemon play and relax, or scuttle off to search for treasures.

What fun.

Before this, the only other Pokemon game I’d played was Pokemon X (which I quite liked), and I think nearly everything was improved in Sun. The only complaints I have are issues with the frame rate, and some of the SOS battles. I felt, at times, that it was a little cheap that not only could the opposing Pokemon attack you, but they could also call in help right after. I think the system might have felt a little more balanced had the Pokemon calling for help take up one of their turns doing so.

Aside from those two issues, I find myself still happy to keep playing. I’ve been exploring early areas and uncovering secrets. It’s still a pleasure to play.

I can’t believe that tomorrow The Last Guardian will finally be released! The closer it gets, the more worried I become. Not about the quality of the game, but about the Trico. Every time I see him in all his creature majesty, I get immediately choked up. I am already afraid he won’t make it.

So help me god, I will do everything in my power to keep that beautiful creature safe.

Unfortunately, I already have a feeling I will be going through many, many tissues at the conclusion of the game. The connection between human and creature is one I am fond of, and I do not handle even digital loss well.

Aside from all this excitement, I am feeling the end of the year crunch big time. I realized today that I haven’t even touched Far Cry: Primal, Hyper Light Drifter, Bound, and so many other games. When I compile my best of 2016 list in a few weeks, I’d like to have tested out as many games as possible. I just feel badly that I’ve failed to get to so many huge releases this year.

On top of that, I’m still on the (so far, fruitless) hunt for a NES Classic Edition. I’m starting to think I may never have one of my own, and that’s a super bummer to me. I know I don’t need one, but I really, really want one.

Anyway, that’s the status in my ville. The more I tell myself I need to finish Dishonored 2, the less I seem to play it, and the more I remind myself that I need to crack down on at least playing as many 2016 releases as possible, the less progress I seem to make.

I need to figure out how to properly wire myself to be appropriately productive. I’m working on it.

With that I wish you a good week. What games are on your agenda?

  3. I hate the SOS battles so much! I love the game, but the SOS battles makes capturing new pokĂ©mons a pain…I will finish the game before starting to get new monsters for my living dex.

I’m so pumped for The Last Guardian…I think I will stop playing Watch Dogs 2 and PokĂ©Moon and focus only on The Last Guardian.

I don’t know if you’re going to agree with me but I think 2016 had been an awesome year for video games. And still want to play things like Gears 4, Titanfall 2, Abzu, Oxenfree, SUPERHOT…I don’t think I will be able to play everything I want this year.

    • Oh man, when you finally find a Pokemon you’ve been wanting to catch and it turns into a ridiculous SOS battle…oof. I’m not joking that I’ve spent like ten minutes on one battle just trying to take one out so I can catch the other.

I absolutely agree that 2016 has been a great year for games! I’ve played so many that I loved, and I’m not even close to done yet! And it already looks like next year is shaping up to be just as rad.

      I just love games. :)

  4. I’ve fallen into the black hole of The Witcher 3 and I don’t regret it at all. I’m stopping at nearly every quest marker and doing my small part to assist the area’s denizens. I’m taking a relaxing approach to gaming in December. Basically sticking with The Witcher 3 and adding in other games depending on what I want to play but definitely hoping to play Inside. Game on and have fun!

    • To be fair, that’s an amazing black hole to fall into! I love that game so much and really want to get back to it for the DLC packs.

Like you, I went to every marker. I think when I finished the game, I had uncovered everything I could that wasn’t part of the DLC. It’s just so good. My partner is playing through it now and he loves it. I’d go out on a limb and say it’s the best RPG I’ve ever played.

I hope you have a stellar time!

  5. I’m still working on Spirit of Justice and Titanfall 2. It’s mostly been Spirit of Justice lately but I’m on the last case so hopefully I can play Pokemon Moon. I’m hoping to get them done by year end. I hope you enjoy Last Guardian!

No matter what you play, I hope you enjoy it!

      • Rebekah , when you start Titanfall 2; I’d like to hear your thoughts. Also, looking forward to your end of the year blog & upcoming 2017 blog. Fyi, I have already started paying for Mass Effect: Andromeda.

        • Nice! You are already working on next year!

And I’ve come to realize I won’t get any games played unless I just do it and worry later about barfing all over the place.

          I believe in myself!

          • Hey Rebekah! I decided to take a few days off from Mafia 3; I’m near the end. I have yet to start Titanfall 2. Do you have any advice for starting a game; just haven’t done so yet? I think that would make for an interesting blog. Buying games: Haven’t started? Thoughts? Side note: Hope you get better soon. Drink plenty of fluids & stay warm!

            • Sometimes that is nice, some time away to cleanse the palate.

I believe I’ve actually written about that before! I talked about my spreadsheet of all my games and all my notes in my notebook about which games I want to play. Of course, what ends up happening is that I just decide based on my mood.

And thank you, I’m working on it!
