October Game Challenge: Week Four (Inching Towards Progress)

Hooray for branching out!

Yes, that statement means I actually managed to play games other than Destiny this past week! I mean, yes, I still played a bunch of Destiny (and finally beat the Wrath of the Machine raid), but I managed to not only start Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4 (I played, and completed, the Xbox One version, but I’ve been wanting to play it on PS4 since it released), but I also played through The Bunker. Wheee!

On the basis of numbers alone, I’ve already completed more games this year than I did last year (this year I’ve completed 30 games so far), but I have a feeling I won’t necessarily hit my goal of completing 52 games by year’s end.

No matter what, I’m still going to try to reach that goal.

But let me backtrack through this past week.

I’d already beat Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One, but since it released on PS4, I’ve found myself wanting to play it again. This isn’t just because I’m in the mood for it, but also because I never got around to playing the Baba Yaga DLC. I may not have been a fan of the story for the main campaign, but I had a good time with the game overall. I’m glad I’ve started it again, even if I am behind on 2016 releases.

And speaking of 2016 releases, I played through The Bunker last night, and what an odd little game that was. I’m not even sure how I should refer to it. Is it an FMV game? Perhaps a live-action game? Basically the entire game consists of video footage (and still shots of the environments from the videos) and plays a bit like an old school adventure game.

I believe The Bunker was meant to be a story-driven thriller, however I wasn’t overly impressed by the story, and I definitely didn’t feel thrilled. I like that Splendy Games wanted to try something like this, I just thought it fell flat. Even though the game only took me two hours to play through, I was moderately bored throughout.

And I don’t get bored.

Still, I’m glad I tried it out.

For this week I have a highly doable plan: to play a shorter game every other day and continue playing longer games between them (e.g.: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Destiny). I have high hopes for getting to the following games:

Among the Sleep
Asemblance
Bound
Dear Esther
Emily Wants to Play
Jazzpunk
Layers of Fear
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2
Trials of the Blood Dragon

I love that there are some super varied titles in there and I’m looking forward to sampling as many of them as I can.

Another gaming milestone that happened this weekend was my first impromptu Twitch stream! I was testing out the functionality while also playing the Jackbox Party Pack 3 with some friends, and we had a heck of a good time! Sure the stream delay was a bit frustrating, but I think I may have found a way to reduce that for the future (further tests will be necessary!). I’d love for more people to be involved next time, so, if you are inclined, please follow me on Twitch so we can group up in the future!

I will start streaming on a schedule in 2017 but, between now and then, there will be many impromptu gatherings. I’m looking forward to playing with people! And a big thank you to the people who were there for the first one! Quiplash 2 is a funny, funny game, made even better with friends.

So, I’m pleased to report a productive, and enjoyable, week of gaming! It sure feels good to be able to say that.

What are you playing this week? Any new releases on your plate? We are headed straight into the fall/winter rush of games and my head is already starting to spin. What is your most anticipated game for the rest of 2016?

    • Thank you! It felt so good!

And I’m super glad you were there for the Twitch stream; here’s to many more!

Wow, you are already that far in Mafia III? Dang. You just plow right through. And you ended up getting Battlefield 1? Nice! Please let me know your thoughts on it.

Oh man, when I heard The Last Guardian went gold, my stomach did a little flip. It looks beautiful. But so help me, if they kill the Trico, I will lose my crap.

      • Looking forward to more streams with you. Yep I kinda want to be finished with it already. I certainly will and I hope Trico doesn’t die but I think it will happen just for a emotional impact to the story.

        • Uggghhh…I don’t even want to consider it. I drove past a bus with an advertisement for the game today, and I got choked up, no joke, just looking at it.

  2. I feel like I just crawled out from under a rock from the last week after endless deadlines only to still have a never ending “to do” list. But that’s why we have video games! Congratulations on the games played and streaming successes! Much deserved applause! I’m bouncing in between Dying Light and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided right now. But the Titanfall 2 reviews have me so hyped for the game’s release this week! The only problem being that I’ll be out of town this weekend. I too want to add shorter games to my mix. I’m waiting for winter sales but I’ve my eye on Inside and The Turing Test. And I really want to buy a Gears of War 4 controller.

    • Oh man, that’s no good. I hope you find yourself in a productive way, and get to free up your time for some solid gaming!

Thank you! It was so much fun. If you are on Twitch, please follow the channel so we can get you involved next time! Quiplash 2 was just the perfect game for what we were doing.

I loved Dying Light; are you enjoying it? What do you think of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided?

I saw GI’s review for Titanfall 2 today and WOW. They clearly loved it.

I haven’t played The Turing Test, but I can highly recommend Inside. It is fascinating.

No matter what, you have an excellent plate of gaming ahead of you!

  3. I’m not into Halloween but I’m playing a really appropriate game for the time…DOOM! While I’m not a FPS superfan but I’m really enjoying the game. I love when the game forces you to move instead of hide behind cover(don’t get me wrong, I love those too!). Next on my list I have I am alive. Finished Mafia III recently too..nice game even if flawed.

Then november I’ll be all Watch_Dogs 2 and PokĂ©Moon with The Last Gardian coming right after. And there’s also lots of other cool games coming out like Dead Rising 4…and next year is also packed! It’s such a good time for gaming! Aaaah I want more money and time!

    • Sergio, hi! Welcome!

I really liked that about Doom, too. It wasn’t about cover, it was about hauling a** to stay alive. It was nice to play something at such a frenetic pace. But those rune trials…oof.

That is a heck of a lineup of potentially awesome titles! When I heard The Last Guardian went gold, I said a silent prayer to Sony that they don’t kill the Trico.

I’m also super excited for Dead Rising 4! It looks inappropriately wonderful.

More money and time would always be a good thing!

  4. Still playing Rise of Tomb Raider; I’m loving it! Next up TT’ Batman ep. 3; I plan to get Battlefield 1 in the near future. That’ my most anticipated 2016 release. Rebekah, how far are you into ROTR? Working on the geothermal valley mission. Also, I saw Ouija: Origin of Evil this past weekend. It was ok; nothing to really write home about. I want to see Birth of a Nation too. What movie release are on your must-see list?

    • Well, I finished Rise of the Tomb Raider when it released on Xbox One, but I’m only in the early part on PS4.

I’ve been meaning to watch that! I liked the first Ouija movie, even though it wasn’t great.

I made a post about my Halloween/October horror movie playlist, but there are a couple of new releases on DVD I’m looking forward to like Lights Out.

I hope you have a good time with Battlefield 1 when you get it!

  5. I’m currently playing Gears of War 4 and enjoying it so far. The gameplay is just as solid as it’s always been and from what I’ve played of the campaign and a little bit of Horde mode it’s just as fun as ever. As far as upcoming releases, I’m looking forward to Titanfall 2 and maybe Battlefield 1, though I haven’t decided which console to buy for since Titanfall 2 isn’t Xbox exclusive anymore. I saw the reviews for both and they sound like really good shooters that offer up different multiplayer experiences. It’s going to be an expensive week.

    • I’m glad you are enjoying Gears! I haven’t gotten it, but I hope to play it in the future.

Man, we are really knee deep in shooters right now, aren’t we?

  6. I’ve been making my way through Fallout: New Vegas, I’m approaching the end of the main story. I’m also playing Persona 4 Golden, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. All of these games are rather long, but I’ll get them done eventually. Glad to hear your first stream was a success.

    • Hey! Welcome!

I’ve always wanted to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Are you enjoying it?

Oh man, I started P4G like a year ago, loved it, and somehow got side tracked and have always meant to go back. How deep in the game are you?

Sheesh. Those ARE three massive games. How do you juggle them?

And thank you! Quiplash is so silly and fun anyway, I was just glad people had a good time!

      • Fallout 3 was one of my favorite last-gen games, and New Vegas improved on it. Particularity on how companions are handled. It does tend to crash a lot on the 360, but I still enjoy it. I’m not too far in P4G, I’m only in the second storyline dungeon. Atlus really has a way to make its remasters into a whole new experience. Thanks for the welcome!
