Bracing Myself For The October Game Rush

root-letter-02

We are only three days away from October, and I’m already thinking of the deluge of amazing games headed our way. Every month I take note of which games I have pre-ordered, and which games are releasing in general.

October is going to be a whopper of a month for releases.

I thought I’d run down the list of games I have coming. Brace yourselves; here we go!

warhammer-end-times-vermintide

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide

I actually had only heard of Warhammer in passing until a friend prompted me to look into this title a little further; I’m glad I did. I mean, look at that rat above. He has a skull on his head. What’s not intriguing about that?

That rat has a plan.

The game is a four player co-op experience and my partner and I were so intrigued that we each ordered a copy. It’s a first person shooter set within a fantasy universe and it’s been compared to the Left 4 Dead series. I’ve deliberately not read up too much on this game, as sometimes I like to have a fresh experience without a ton of foreknowledge.

Mafia III

Mafia III has been on my radar for a while, and I’m intrigued by the setting and characters. Set in 1968 in a fictional version of New Orleans, you play as Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran going up against the Italian mob.

If that’s not a great set up for an action/adventure game, I’m not sure what is.

darksiders-warmastered-edition

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition

Darksiders has been a game I’ve wanted to play for a good long while. A friend recommended it to me years ago, likening it to a Legend of Zelda experience, and I was intrigued. When I saw it was getting a remaster for new gen, it seemed like the perfect time to jump in.

yomawari-night-alone

Yomawari: Night Alone / htol#NiQ: The Firefly Diary

That may be the most Japanese video game title I’ve seen in a good long while.

This PS Vita game had me hooked from the moment I read it was based on various Japanese urban legends. You play as a little girl searching for her sister as well as her missing dog.

So help me, I will find that dog.

Oh. And her sister, too.

Root Letter

Over the last chunk of years, I’ve become increasingly interested in Japanese games. Root Letter is a game I heard about that caught my attention right away: It’s a visual novel adventure game where you are searching for a girl who disappeared after receiving a strange letter.

The game is supposed to have faithful recreations of various Japanese locations and I’m looking forward to exploring them more fully later in the month.

elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-special-edition

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition

Skyrim needs no introduction. I watched my partner play the game to completion, but I’ve never actually played it for myself. I think this could be the time to make that leap.

I’d love to say I would jump in to this as soon as it releases, but I still have yet to even start Fallout 4, and I’d likely start that before I start this, another huge open world game.

Oh, Bethesda. You give us such massive, and awesome experiences.

paper-mario-color-splash

Those are just the games I have on pre-order. October has several other huge releases that I’m interested in, but I’m waiting to buy into for one reason or another. The highlights are as follows:

10.07.16
Paper Mario Color Splash

10.11.16
Gears of War 4
Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4)

10.18.16
Battlefield 1

10.28.16
Titanfall 2

The fall season always seems to be bursting with new releases, and this one is no different. There will never be a shortage of great games out there to partake in.

What games are you most looking forward to in October? Which will you get at launch and which will you wait on?

    • Rebekah, I agree with Colton; I too, plan to pick up Tomb Raider since I played the last entry. I also have Battlefield 1 on preorder. I have an interest in Mafia 3; I want to hear more about Titanfall 2. Still not “sold” enough even after playing the MP test. Thoughts?

      • Surprised that you’re not getting Battlefield 1. I can understand Titanfall 2; I too, wasn’t sold on it. I like Battlefield 1 because of the era, WW1. It’s definitely a breathe of fresh air, pun intended! Thoughts?

        • I tried the beta and it just wasn’t for me. It looked great, I just didn’t love the gunplay. Destiny has spoiled me as far as gunplay goes.

If it ever drops in price I could see getting it for the campaign, though.

          • Hey Rebekah! I respect your opinion! Battlefield 1 isn’t for everyone. To each his own, right?! Did you try the MP modes? I am getting it for the MP modes. For me, that’s BIG because I hardly ever play MP. The SP, it’s a plus for me. :)

  1. I’m not sure how it’s nearly October. I feel like we must’ve skipped a month or two. I’m just as excited to read about and watch video footage of games that I’m not getting as I am to play the games that I am getting. Mafia 3 is on my radar for sure and one day I’ve got to get XCom 2 on the Xbox One. In October my only pre-order right now is Titanfall 2. I absolutely adored Titanfall. The recent tech test made me apprehensive. But the free DLC maps and recent announcements (i.e. that Attrition is returning) as well as that all voiceover is subtitled have kept my pre-order in place. Secretly, I’m excited for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare because I want to command a spaceship.

  2. Right now Gears of War 4 will most likely be a release day buy for me. As goofy as it is, I love the campaigns and its always a good excuse for co-op with my brothers. End of month might be expensive depending on how Titanfall 2 turns out and the Skyrim remaster is almost certainly a release day buy.

    • I’ve never played one all the way through, though I’ve wanted to. I started the first one but didn’t get very far for some reason.

Oh man, that Skyrim remaster. I’m looking forward to it.

      • The co-op really helps with those games as the combat can be really annoying if you play solo especially on the higher difficulties. Since you liked Doom, I think that you might come out liking it if you give it a try.

As soon as I saw the Skyrim remaster announcement, I couldn’t wait to start all over again from scratch. I just get lost in the exploration and discovery.

Oh gosh, Skyrim. I can’t wait to see all the new videos and screenshots people make and share. It’s going to be amazing.
