I recently took some time to peruse the current list of scheduled 2016 releases and discovered something interesting: of all the games with “solid” release dates, there are none that I’m over the moon about. There are many I am intrigued by (and want to learn more about), but none that I am clamoring to get my hands on.

This may be because there are still plenty of 2015 (and 2014, and 2013…) releases I’ve yet to get to, and I can see my digital dance card will be plenty full for the foreseeable future.

Either way, I can’t wait to hear more about the following titles releasing in 2016:

The Witness: January 26

Jonathan Blow’s follow up to Braid has been a long time coming. The Witness was announced back at the Sony press conference revealing the PS4, so we’ve known about (and seen bits and pieces of) the game for years now. The more I hear of the nature of the game, and the more I see of the dreamy visuals, I can’t wait to explore the island of The Witness.

This War of Mine: January 29

Several games have allowed us experiences that wouldn’t be considered “fun” but have been memorable for other reasons. Since hearing about This War of Mine, I have been more than curious to play through the game to have the experience of trying to parse out limited resources in the wake of a massive war.

Firewatch: February 9

Of all the games with “solid” release dates for 2016, I may be the most excited for Firewatch.

Set in the remote wilderness of Wisconsin, the spare environment and cryptic encounters with the very few people you have contact with intrigues me. There is a mystery afoot, and I can’t wait to uncover more when it releases in February.

Unravel: February 9

Since the moment Unravel was revealed during an E3 press conference and its adorable creator (and protagonist) took the stage, I was hooked. Yarny (the protagonist) making his way through some of the most beautiful and whimsical environments was enchanting to watch. I can’t wait to see where the journey takes us.

Far Cry: Primal: February 23

I am a huge fan of the Far Cry series, but so far Primal has left me undecided. The more I see of it, the more I wonder how this game will actually play out and carry the interest of the audience.

I suppose we will see come February.

The Division: March 8

The Division has been a huge question mark on the horizon since it was announced. I have many concerns over the functionality of both the online aspect, and the game itself. I’m hoping we hear and see more of the game in the months to come to quash some of those lingering unknowns.

Quantum Break: April 5

Quantum Break is a game that I feel like the more I see of it, the less I understand how it will play out. I like the ambition with which Remedy is developing the game, but I have yet to form a true understanding of how that will play out in reality.

And here are four games without release dates that I am definitely looking forward to hearing more about next year:

Dishonored 2

I had no expectations going into Dishonored, and I was taken aback with how much I enjoyed the game. That being said, I like the direction the Dishonored 2 seems to be taking, and I’m more than interested in seeing more of it in the coming year.

The Forest

The Forest may be a first person survival horror game in line with many others that have released in recent years, but there is something about it that sets it apart. The more I see of it, the more I’d like to play it for myself.

The Last Guardian

Sony blew many of us out of the water at E3 when they confirmed that this game would actually be coming to fruition. As someone who is endlessly fascinated by creatures, I am both excited and nervous to see where the game takes the boy and his creature companion.

No Man’s Sky

This is another game that the more I see of it, the more I want to see more of it. I have no idea how the seemingly simplistic game mechanics will hold the player’s attention for long time spans, but I am excited to play it for myself whenever it finally releases. As of the time of this writing, there is a general release date of “June 2016,” but nothing more concrete has been announced.
