The Hilariously Lackluster Trophy Screenshots On The PS4

Dragon Age™: Inquisition_20150328193327

Allow me to begin by saying, I love the PS4 screen capture function. I really do. I love it so much that I wrote about it previously. And I still mean every word.

But back with update 2.50, Sony brought about the following:

Automatic Trophy Screenshots — A screenshot will automatically be captured when a Trophy is earned, preserving the moment to share with friends.

Hmmm…

Well, sure, I thought. That might be interesting.

Or it might not.

Allow me to share some of the many “exciting” moments that trophies were earned and subsequent screenshots captured beginning with the above image taken in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Just look at all that excitement. Woo doggie.

I know. Let’s all take a moment to soak that in.

Here is the benchmark moment when, in the Handsome Collection, I earned a trophy that I’d earned previously, and it somehow unlocked when I looked in my fast travel menu.

What a beaut.

Oh hey, look! Here is when I scrolled down a few entries and unlocked yet another trophy just moments later. Look at all the diversity in the two images!

Astonishing!

And here is the unforgettable moment when I was apparently shooting (or phaselocking…it’s hard to tell) a Slagged Stalker and unlocked another trophy. Just look at all those numbers.

Neato.

Here is another brilliant moment where I was fast traveling and unlocked a trophy.

Whoosh!

My my. Just look at this breathtaking image of stairs.

Thank goodness I have this. Otherwise I would have forgotten the occasion.

Oh hey! A pile of something and a platform or something.

Awesome!

The only cool thing about this is the Luneshine on my rocket launcher. It’s sort of Tron-esque. I can dig that. Otherwise, this image is BO-RING.

Would you just look at that!

(It’s okay if you don’t want to. I barely want to and I was there.)

Well lookie here! I just completed a mundane mission, and here are my crappy green gun rewards. I’m so glad I can commemorate the occasion with this image of Springs where she can’t even keep her eyes open.

Even she isn’t interested and she is the one giving out the missions.

Far Cry® 4_20150327202727

Oh the moment in Far Cry 4 when I was doing some random thing.

Priceless.

Far Cry® 4_20150327175828

I thought I’d end on the only, and I mean only, trophy screenshot that I actually find somewhat interesting. This was in Far Cry 4, and I’m pretty sure the only reason it looks this cool is because I had also just finished a side mission, thus rendering the screen into slow motion blur.

I know Sony meant well, and I’m sure the function will be far more interesting in games like Bloodborne where a victory over a tough boss may result in a hidden trophy popping. But for regular, every day nonsense trophies, I imagine this is about as exciting as it will get.

I feel the need to apologize as I’ve likely never been as snarky in a post, and my sarcasm meter definitely ran high. What can I say? Sometimes the absurd will bring it out of me.

With this bit of silliness, I bid each of you a stellar weekend of gaming and good times all ’round.

Cheers, friends.

  1. I think most people who would want to capture footage of gameplay would just use a capture card. I will say nice luneshine though! I think that’s what always brings me back to the Pre-Sequel- trying to get those purple and orange guns. That and the fact of being super bad-ass when you upgrade Athena’s shield. Will you do Borderlands for a game challenge this month? Don’t get bummed out, they’re supposed to be fun for everyone that includes you! Happy gaming!

    • isn’t that luneshine cool looking?

gearbox actually responded to an email i sent and apparently the drop rates for loot are being tweaked. so perhaps we will see oranges more often.

i would love to do borderlands for a game challenge, but i want to finally play bloodborne and i want to be ready for the witcher on the 19th, so…we will see.

and happy gaming to you, too! :)

      • Thank you! :)
More legendaries? YES!!! You might play Bloodbourne? Eeh, uhm I don’t know about that one. You might be great at it, but let me tell you from personal experience that any game made by the Dark Souls team has been fun, but frustrating.. (I’m probably just a dirty causal XD).

I’d say play witcher 2, but that’s also kinda long. Either way hope you have fun!

            • oh gosh, no worries. you didn’t. i’ve felt daunted by the difficulty of this game since i knew i was going to get it, and i’m exceptionally good at psyching myself out! :)

i’m going to give it my all, and i already have two friends who have offered to come in and be my training wheels. lord knows i will need them!

and thank you! i need that luck!

  2. That’s hilarious! When the feature was announced I like to imagine developers thinking about what is typically displayed on screen during the trophy pop and saying, “Awwww crap!”

Seriously though, it would be cool if they take that into consideration with future titles to make sure automatic screen grabs are more brag-worthy.

    • i’m still not sure it would work out. there are so many games where the trophies will pop between areas so the screen is going to be blank for a huge amount of them. and even though i think it’s pretty silly, i got a kick out of compiling the ones on my system. especially the five completely black screenshots from different dragon age inquisition trophies. :)

  3. Thanks for the laughs! I found this post very amusing!

I’ll have to take a look the next time I get a trophy and really take in the full beauty of the glorious screenshot I am presented with. :P
